| Profilewriter's Full Review: Treasure Island At The Mirage |
We have stayed in no fewer than six Las Vegas hotels, and in most ways Treasure Island offered the best accommodations.
View from the rooms
Rooms at Treasure Island all have floor to ceiling windows, and most have excellent views. We are easterners and the tall, raw mountains that surround Las Vegas are very different from the leafy vistas we are used to. The views of the coal black mountains as they turned rose or deep blue, depending on the time of day, was a real treat.
Set at an angle, like its sister resort, the Mirage, Treasure Island has many rooms that look out at both the mountains and the lights of the strip -- and also the volcano at the Mirage. We had both of those views, and I would recommend requesting them to anyone who enjoys spending some time taking in the views from a perch high above the desert city.
Beyond the view
The rooms themselves are attractive and spacious, with dark print bedspreads. Rates here generally are quite a bit lower than at the Mirage next door, and we found the rooms at this newer resort slightly better looking.
So-so pool
A major drawback to staying at Treasure Island for us is that the pool area, located on a lower lever roof top, is just ordinary. It will be fine for most people, but it is just a concrete deck with an average size pool, while next door, the Mirage boasts acres of lush, palm-studded lawns around its pool complex. The Mirage has no fewer than three pools, a dolphin pool, waterfalls and verdant walkways. Other swimming areas along the strip also offer lush surroundings, making the Treasure Island
pool area something of a come down.
Public areas
In many ways, Treasure Island has the most inviting casino/lobby areas on the Strip. Colors are understated rather than garish. And while this is not a small hotel, its spaces are manageable, and even intimate, compared with the MGM Grand or even the Hilton. The sports bar area is one of the smallest in town, but also one of the most attractive and friendly.
There are gift shops, of course, and a game room and a number of restaurants. We did not eat many meals here, but enjoyed casual dining spots on the concourse area.
The pirates
From gift shops to cocktail lounges to rooms, pirates are the theme here, and the hotel pulls it off well. The pirate battles held in front of the hotel on what look like full sized sailing ships are great fun. We had heard about them before we visited, but were surprised at how well staged they were. Sounds hokey, and I guess it is, but the shows draw big crowds and everyone seems to be smiling from beginning to end.
The location
Treasure Island is connected to the Mirage via a little tram. The ride back and forth is fun, at least at first. There is a recorded announcement touting both hotels' amenities, and after a few days it gets awfully tedious. Still, it is a good service.
From Treasure Island, many resorts, including the enormous Caesars property with its over-the-top shopping mall, are within an easy walk. On a cool day, a walk down to Bellagio, Venice and MGM would not be out of the question either, but generally they are a short cab ride away.
The rates
Wildly erratic is the best characterization of rates here, and everywhere else in Las Vegas. $49 one night and well over $200 on another, Treasure Island changes its rates based on the season, the night of the week and other factors we have not been able to figure out.
Generally, it is less expensive than many other resorts, but not always.
Bottom line
This might be the best choice on the Strip for anyone who does not put a spectacular pool area high on a list of important features. Its decorating scheme is most attractive, its spaces easily navigable, its rooms have great views and its pirates are a delight.
