| Natasha37's Full Review: Disneys Caribbean Beach |
Last Christmas, my family (husband, daughter, my Mom, Dad and Brother) decided to forego traditional gifts and pool our resources for a trip to Disney. We went the week of December 1st.
My parents chose the mid-priced Caribbean Beach Resort believing the accommodations would be a bit more plush. The accommodations turned out to be our biggest vacation disappointment.
Walking into the rooms, the strong scent of mold and mildew hit immediately. It reminded me of the dressing rooms surrounding the indoor heated pool at the local YMCA. The orange carpeting was stained and worn in both rooms. I really couldn't believe this was a Disney hotel and in the mid-price range.
The rooms were fairly small, containing two full-size beds, a table and an Armoire for the television with a few drawers for clothing. A tiny refrigerator in the room was stocked with mostly candy and soda. The bathroom was also tiny fitting just a tub and toilet. The mirror and sink was outside the bathroom, which is something I like when you are sharing a room with two other people. My mother and father had complaints about their bed -- no support, squeaky and lumpy. My brother volunteered to switch beds, but was pretty grumpy in the morning and complained of a bad night's sleep.
The other disappointment was the food court. Each morning we were greeted by the cheesy, blaring Caribbean-themed music. There was lousy fast food at every turn -- pizza slices, hamburgers, etc. One little bakery luckily offered muffins and fruit salad. We learned quickly to purchase items for our room for breakfast and only stop at the food court for the endless flow of coffee. We tried the pricier restaurant within the food court, but selection was minimal and grossly overpriced. We usually ate a large dinner out at whatever theme park we visited each day.
The positive of our stay was the pool and laundry area. Peaceful and secluded and able to catch up on your laundry while you're lounging. The transportation system is also a positive. It allows you to hop a bus and leave your car behind, although it does take a few days to really know how to use it efficiently. I'd suggest reading all the brochures the first night you arrive to plan out your activities for the next few days.
My daughter also enjoyed the hammocks on the "artificial" sandy white beach, although the setting gave me a Twilight Zone feel. All around are signs saying "Swimming is Prohibited" or "DO NOT SWIM IN THE WATER". It's a big reminder that this isn't the real world, just a Disney created fantasy and a cheesy one at that.
