| pokemonsick's Full Review: Disneys Caribbean Beach |
For our families June 2000 vacation to Disney World, we chose to stay at the Caribbean Beach Resort. Check in was a snap done in a building known as the Custom House. A lovely welcome to the islands! Transportation is provided for you and your luggage from here to your room on whichever island you are staying on. The resort is divided into 6 separate islands: Aruba, Barbados, Martinique, Trinidad, Trinidad North, and Jamaica. We were originally slated to stay on Jamaica, but as we wanted a smoking room (bad us), we were moved to Aruba with absolutely no fuss.
Each island unit is done with brightly colored village roofs, each different to make finding yours very easy. The rooms are done in softer shades of the same color. Ours was a rose color. We found our room to be more then spacious enough to accommodate the 4 of us. Each room had a coffee pot available, and you paid for the packs of coffee actually used. Rain ponchos, were available in the room for purchase, as were special covered resort cups which I would definitely recommend purchasing. These are refillable as many times as you wish for the entire length of your stay in the food court section of the main village. Coffee, tea, water, and soft drinks are available. You will save a bundle with these. I believe they were $8 + tax. It was especially nice to have 4 different colors to choose from. These are also available right in the food court for a bit less, but the colors available there are limited.
Each village had a pool available for their use, and a white sand beach to relax on. Hammocks were available, but no swimming is allowed at the beach. You are allowed to swim at any villages pool. The Old Port Royale, main section of all the villages, has the full featured pool done Disney style. It is designed to look like a pirate fortress complete with water shooting cannons, and a waterfall. There is also a slide. Port Royale has a poolside lounge and snack bar- The Banana Cabana. In the main building are 2 places to shop, and the food court which includes a pizza place, a pasta place, a burger place, a bakery, a deli, and a chicken place. The food isn't too bad, and one thing Birnbaum's (our planning bible) didn't tell us, is that most have some sort of breakfast available from omelets, to waffles, to egg platters.
Also in the Old Port Royale building is the full service restaurant- the Captain's Tavern. The speciality here is prime rib, and coconut chicken. Other island specialties are also available like jerk chicken. There is a children's menu, and the wait staff are friendly, and helpful. Reservations (priority seating) are not always needed. The food was awesome both times we ate here.
It appeared to us that every 2 or 3 buildings shared a bus station which is where you go to catch transportation to all the Disney parks. It is not too far of a walk, and I have to say I was impressed by how often buses for each destination came by! Miss one, don't worry there will be another one coming in the next 5-10 minutes.
Our favorite part of our stay here had to do with of all things the housekeeping staff! These people have a great sense of humor, and leave you wondering what to expect next! One day you may return to your room to find every stuffed animal you left behind lined up to use the potty, with a couple in the tub for good measure! On another, a stuffed cat may be buried under some tissues with some flying pokemon hanging from the lamps! The best though is to return from a long day to see them all sitting in your room's window on a pillow, with one holding a sign which reads "we missed you today." Kudos to a creative staff!
Would we stay here again? You better believe it! We couldn't have asked for more! (except for a little less rain maybe, but that's another story!)
