Good, light-hearted fun

Written: Jul 25, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:fun gameplay, great humor, light hearted, gives what it promises
Cons:Gameplay can become a little repeative, plot make no sense, oddness is not for everyone.
The Bottom Line: Overall, this is a cheesy and light-hearted game that sounds is clearly not meant to be taken seriously. It delivers what it promises; a raw hack 'n' slash game.

To start of this review I want to state one thing right of the bat:
This is a Suda51 game.
Instantly which these words the entirety of what you'd expect from the game changes. I mean, don't get me wrong, with a name like "Lollipop Chainsaw", it's pretty obvious this is not your average game...
But add that to the fact that this game is from the same team that produced such amazingly weird, morbid and just plain odd games such "Flower, Sun and Rain", "Killer7" and "No More Heroes"and you have one video game which is beyond your imagination...

The "Plot" (if you can even call it that...)

First of, what is the game about?
Well...it's hard to explain...it's something you have to play to know about but here's the basic gist of it:

You play as Juliet, a high school cheerleader who has just turned 18...Oh and she also happens to secretly be a zombie hunter.
You go around the stages, using your chainsaw/gun hybryde to kill zombies in bloody ways while the somehow living lone head of your boyfriend hangs from your waist. Your dad also happen to be a Zombie hunter as well as your sister and mom who also have apparently be killing zombies for years...before they even existed in the ingame universe...somehow...
Anyway, you have to stop the Zombie apocolype by killing the bosses, all of which are incarnations of different cultures. For example, one boss is a punk rocker who uses autotune on his voice to try and make fun of Steven Hawerkings...
Seriously I'M NOT making this up.

That's the basic gist of what the game is about but in terms of the acual plot...It's sort of hard to explain.
Basically like said before it's Juliet's 18th birthday (which means that she's technically of legal age, if only just...) and she rushes out of her house to find that Zombies have began appearing all around, something which she finds normal for some reason. She fights her way to the school to find that her boyfriend, Nick, is not yet infected...he however gets bitten by a zombie while trying to save Juliet.
So what does Juliet do as a loving girlfriend...? She cuts his head of.

SERIOUSLY. So, for the rest of the game, she runs around with her lover's head (which is still somehow alive) dangling from her waist. Anyway, the two (or rather the one which a extra head) make there way through the school to find Morikawa, Juliet's mentor in Zombie hunting, who explains what has caused the outbreak of Zombies...
He explains that there are three words, "Earth", "The Land Beyond" and "The Rotten World". Someone has apparently broken the tunnel between Earth and The Rotten World somehow and that this caused zombies to go crazy all over Earth...

Seriously, this is probably the most STUPIDEST explaination for a game event in the history of mandkind. It's obvious that the plot was not given to much thought...

So after this, you set out to find who's responsible for what happened and it turns out a random guy called Swan somehow managed to break open the tunnel and is also somehow able to summon 5 zombie demon overlords...

And thus you start your quest to try and take out these 5 overloads to stop the outbreak and save humanity...

It get's more crazy...

If the extremely strange and odd plot isen't enought to make one mentally ill, there's MORE then that...

The game is sexual. I mean REALLY freaking sexual. It's like a sex obssed  teenager in game form...
In fact, the first thing you see when you start the game up is Juliet lying naked on her bed cuddling up to a teddy bear all while she narrates how "...just because she's let you into her room, it's not an invite for any funny business".
This should set th tone for how the rest of the game is. It's filled with a shoots up skirts, old men falling onto breasts and guys talking about (if you'll excuse my dirty words for a seconds) masterbating tp Juliet.

The game is also a strange mixture of the gross and the cute...You'll be cutting though hoards of zombies which blood spraying all over and then suddenly bright colored stars while start to flash over the screen...Or you'll be trying to survive a level, all while Juliet and Nick have a random conversation about how they are planning to have a baby in the future.
It's hard to explain in text and is something you have to see for yourself but it's like no other game ever made...
In what other game can you be massacring your zombized school mates in clood blood all while rainbows fly every which way?

Gameplay

So what's the gameplay like?
Well the basic gameplay is a simple hack 'n' slash game in which you mash buttons to perform combos with your chainsaw. There are other gameplay elements thrown in however:
For example, at a certain point in the game your chainsaw somehow grows a gun and is able to shoot enemies from long range, turning the game into a shooter of sorts. There's also other parts which change up the basic gameplay so that, rather then just going through and killing zombies, you've got range of objectives and gameplay elements that keep the somewhat repetitive nature of simply tapping the button over and over fresh.

There are also a few quick time events in the game however these are not over done and are simply used, rather then for example defeat a boss, to give you a break from the somewhat drawn out fighting parts.

The game DOES include upgrades and unlockables through the use of an in game Internet which let's you purchase things from the one and only website you can access.

Overview

To summarize...what can I say? It's one of the most pointless, sexual and over the top game ever made. But this is not something that is a negative point towards the game...in fact, it's clear from what you see in the game that it was MEANT to be over the top. It was MEANT to feel pointless and somewhat like a stupid excuse for killing zombies.
The humor expressed in this game is one of self-awareness and it clearly makes itself over the top to the point in which NO ONE can possibly think it was not intentionally down as a game theme.

The theme of this game is one of sex, killing, blood, cute stuff and just a light-hearted experiences which is not meant to be taken as a serious attempt to portray a love story or a serious plot of any kind.

In summery, if you're looking for a game with a plot and gameplay that bleed art then this is not for you. But if, like me, you just want a mindless game, where you can laugh at the cheesy humor and have fun hacking away at enemies (what the game developers clearly intended) then this is a must.
