| ms.hell's Full Review: Adbusters Magazine |
I stumbled across an issue of Adbusters several months ago and was instantly taken with its message and presentation. Often when I seek a magazine I want something brief that I can read on the subway. However, it seems that brief almost always translates into "fluff" and "gloss" and pages and pages of advertising. What a relief to find a magazine which is interesting and doesn't bombard me with advertising and yucky perfume samples!
I feel that Adbusters is an example of activism that is creative and well reasoned. I enjoy reading a magazine that takes a larger social perspective on topics than is typically available on the magazine rack. While the messages in this magazine are often ominous and highly political, they do not fall into the stereotype of being nagging party-pooping, tree-huggers. The magazine is evidence that yes, you can be politically aware yet retain your sense of fun and wit...
I have found however, that the issues tend to vary in quality. The consistency of articles and art in various issues are not equivalent.
Regardless, every Adbusters I have shared with friends has been greatly appreciated. Even for those who do not necessarily share the same perspectives, the articles and quality of visual art can provide some pause for thought.
As someone who struggles to overcome my "overconsumption brainwashing" (living in an area where many people have plastic parts and no one thinks twice about spending more money on a handbag or a dinner out than some families make in a week)I often find it inspiring to read about those with an alternative lifestyle from all around the world.
