HOLY COW!!!
I can't believe that I found "Out in the Mountains" here on Epinions. This was the first gay periodical that I had ever laid my hands on and provided much inspiration, guidance, news and opinion throughout my college life and even during my time in Maine.
Please be aware that the details of this review cover my experience with Out in the Mountains from 1995 to about 2000. Some of the details may have changed since then.
As for the details of the newspaper...It is published once a month and covers all of Vermont and some of New Hampshire (mostly northern New Hampshire). There are current news sections, interview sections, a health section, an events section and of course, comics. All of teh stories in the paper are well written and researched and you really do get a lot of information in a fairly small package (each issue was about 30 pages of about 1/2 regular newspaper size). I found that the regional news and health sections were the most detailed and best written sections.
Out in the Mountains (OITM) serves as Vermont's only statewide gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered news source. This in of itself is quite an accomplishment and proved to be invaluable during the Civil Union debates. OITM kept the LGBT community appraised of developments in the debate and mobilized the community to support the approval of Civil Unions.
OITM also supports many community organizations and programs. They help to sponsor a drag ball in Newport every year and sponser many different events in Burlington with Outright Vermont and other organizations. OITM even helped the Gay-Straight Alliance at my college while I was president. I worked with the editor to secure funding for our programs and they provided free advertising for it. We had several successful events and I mark most of it up to the hard work that OITM gave us. Without this type of resource, many LGBT people in Vermont would not have the information available to take part in the rich and vibrant LGBT community that exists across the state.
As I said before, I believe that OITM was instrumental in helping the Civil Union law pass and I know that they have been very instrumental in protecting it. They have notified their readers every time there has been a challenge to the law and each time, the LGBT and Ally community has been able to stop and repeal of the law.
If you live in Vermont, NH or Northeastern NY (Plattsburg area), then you should be reading this paper. It is freely distributed throughout the state and you can get a subscription to it for a reasonable price, should you not want to go out and get it for free. This paper provides so much information for LGBT people, that I think without it, any LGBT person in Vermont is truly missing out on a big part of the community. Go out and read it today!

Update 12/27/02
I was recently in Vermont (October) and picked up a new copy of Out in the Mountains. The paper is still all of the above and has even more information in it (expanded resource section) then when I was living up there and getting the paper often. I still whole-heartedly suggest this paper for you. The coverage on the Civil Union issues in Vermont is exceptional. You would be amazed at how much is happening in VT, especially since you never hear about it outside of the state.
