BlackBear's Full Review: Analog Science Fiction Magazine
I've known about Analog for several years because I used to read copies that I found at doctor's offices or similar places when I was a kid. Back then, the art of the short story was lost on me, but I would read anything to keep from being bored. Now I find the short story to be just as, sometimes more, fun than a full novel. I wish I had known that way back when.
A couple of years ago I rediscovered this series when I was at a second hand book store. They had "lots" of these magazines for sale and I bought several of them that were dated from early 1965 to 1970. After reading a few of those, I made a few calls and got myself added to the list of regular subscribers. I still look for these in the second hand book stores as I try to complete the series.
So what changed about my reading tastes? Nothing really. I don't have the time to read the full novels like I used to. I like to get the first print of both novels and stories from some of my favorite authors. Most of all, I'm much more interested in the "pure" science that this magazine has articles on than I used to be. This is the only place that I can get all of that at one time.
There are some drawbacks to having this magazine. Even though they are now the size of a trade paperback, the price continues to increase more and more each year. They do this for many reasons. They want to rely less on ads than keep the price low, and in a way this pays off for them. Instead of taking away from the amount of stories and articles by placing more ads in each issue, they just raise the price a bit and the consumer (you and me) pay a little more for our dose of fine writing.
As long as I can get a discount on the annual rate, I'll remain a regular subscriber. If it comes right down to it, I'll not buy any new novels for the month that the bill comes to renew each year. I get longer lasting enjoyment from these 12 issues a year that I do from a single novel.
