atara's Full Review: Analog Science Fiction Magazine
It's all the library's fault.
I was waiting for a bus on a really hot summer afternoon. The library was air-conditioned, and I had almost twenty minutes before my bus came... So I went into the library.
While idly browsing the periodicals, one smallish, digest-sized magazine caught my eye. Analog had a bright, colorful cover with a picture of a rocket ship. I picked it up.
I'd heard of Analog before, but had never been able to find a copy. (How could I have gone all these years, ignorant of the fact that the local library carried it?) I am a true sci-fi geek, and I was immediately swept into the stories. Time travel! Aliens! Alternate histories! Woo hoo! The stories are nicely varied, while staying generally along the science fiction theme. I've never given up on a story in disgust, and I almost always come away from a story with a sense of satisfaction.
When I was first reading Analog, I skipped over the factual articles. I'm a science major I thought. I get enough boring articles to read at school.
I couldn't have been more wrong. The articles aren't boring; they are complex enough to be interesting while simple enough for a reasonably intelligent person to understand them. I have noticed in the Letters section of the magazine that the articles aren't always totally correct, but the magazine usually admits the error and publishes the correction. Now, rather than skipping the articles, I read the magazine cover to cover.
Eventually I subscribed to the magazine so that I could save especially good stories for myself. My copies are dog-eared and ragged, and have suffered through many readings and re-readings. It's become my nighttime habit to curl up in bed with the magazine and read a story or two before turning off the light. Unfortunately, I'll have to cancel my subscription due to money constraints; the magazine is a little on the pricey side. I've consoled myself with the fact that I can get the magazine from the library whenever I need my fix.
