For the new reader who might sit still in your lap for only a few minutes at any given time, this is a great magazine to bring into your home once a month. First of all, it's your child's first time to hear, every 30 days or so, "You have mail!!" I always made this into a big & exciting event--we'd immediately crawl up on the couch and look at the cover together, talking about what we saw. Even though my son was too young to converse with me about the images, he was very intrigued, and my dialogue with him kept his attention. I kept each issue and am now reading them to my daughter (18 months). She, also, enjoys seeing the common characters of Kim and her bunny at the introduction of each magazine. The binding is not good for lasting re-use, however. Several of these mini-books have broken, and I have had to tape in the pages. I bought a couple copies at consignment, so now we have about 20+ issues from 2004 and 2005 (which are classic, with Mother Goose rhymes in each, and other short original poems or re-tellings of fairy tales from days gone by). I do miss the "You have mail!" excitement for my daughter, however, so I am considering subscribing her to something (if not this), since my son is now getting monthly copies of Ranger Rick and Clubhouse Jr.
Each issue comes wrapped with an outside white cover full of suggestions for parents and notes about a toddler's development. I found these so helpful to read (encouraging), that in the final issue, where that cover was replaced with a "Final Issue" notice, I called the company to request the sleeve. They sent me out a second copy of that month's issue right away. Customer service was prompt, friendly and certainly accommodating!
I read Cricket in the 70's and do not know if I will take my children through the whole age-appropriate series presented by the Cricket publishing company, as they get more and more secular and humanist as the children age, with plenty of stories about ghosts, goblins, witches, potions, spells and the unusual spiritual beliefs of cultures all over the world. For now I am content with Babybug for the little ones. Not a controversial topic hits these pages, unless you are opposed, for some reason, to creative illustrations, humorous original poetry and quick reads for fast-movers!! Also, there are no repeated elements throughout a year, or even two, but some poems do get recycled if you go past a two year subscription.
This may seem costly at first, but when you consider that you can keep & hand down each copy you receive, it's more like buying small books once a month for your precious babe.
