Having been a subscriber for two years, I feel as though I am qualified to write an opinion about this magazine. When I first subscribed I had just begun to learn the art of bass playing, and I was not able to afford music lessons, therefore I figured that getting this magazine would be a sort of cheap way of learning the correct way. I was incorrect in this assumption, as this is a magazine geared towards an already knowledgable group of bassists and not for beginners. The information was too confusing for me, having no traditional music education whatsoever, and I did not learn much of anything. I stuck with it for two years mainly for the music reviews and product information which is the best in the business. This magazine is perfect if you already can read musical notation and know quite a bit about playing bass guitar, and for people such as this Bass Player is a must-have. For you beginners out there I would suggest starting out with some instructional books or even lessons before ordering Bass Player for yourself. You'll most likely be wasting your hard-earned money if you order before you have a basic understanding. I finally cancelled my subscription, as at the time I had seen the magazine's quality go downhill. This was two years ago however and they may have improved again since then but I would not know as I havent wanted to subscribe to it again due to my inability to afford lessons in musical notation. I suggest you pick up a copy at the newsstand before deciding for yourself if you can make serious use out of a subscription.
