Bird Talk - a great bird magazine for beginners

Written: Oct 31 '00 (Updated Oct 31 '00)
Pros:Great Value. Very interesting and informative articles.
Cons:Gets somewhat repetitive over time.

I've been a Bird Talk subscriber for several years, and I heartily recommend this magazine for anyone who is thinking about owning a pet bird, especially a hookbill (parrot). The magazine is primarily about parrots, and they usually feature on the cover, but there is also some coverage of softbills. Finches, quail, and other exotics like Toucans and Touracos have been featured in the past. As someone who has done extensive research into the nutrition, care and socialization of parrots before I decided on a species of parrot to add to my family, I have to say that I found Bird Talk to be an invaluable tool. The articles are well researched, informative, and well written. After several years though, I now find the magazine to be somewhat repetitive, and now that I know how to take care of my bird, I find it somewhat less useful.

Feature Articles

These are usually extremely well written, and are accompanied by numerous photographs as you would expect. Generally speaking, a specific species or group of species are featured each issue. Recent issues have featured African Greys, Lorikeets, Cockatiels, Amazons and Cockatoos. Every issue also comes with a "centerfold" with a stunningly beautiful bird that can be removed and used as a poster. The articles usually have sections for each of the different species covered (ie. the African Grey issue covered Timneh and Congo Greys). They also mention any specific nutritional issues (ie. special diets for nectar feeders like lorikeets or calcium deficiencies for African Greys), special care needs for certain species, and attributes of each species. This last aspect is what makes this magazine great for someone interested in buying a parrot. Parrot species vary widely in temperment and capabilities. Cockatoos for instance are very cuddly and needy, while African Greys are usually aloof. Cockatoos generally don't learn to speak particularly well, while African Greys are often considered the best talkers. Both of these species are easily stressed compared to other species like Conures and Amazons, and can have psychological problems if not properly socialized. These are the kinds of things you'll learn about from the Bird Talk feature articles.

Vet Columns - Ask the Expert The magazine also features columns in a question/answer format with advice and information by veterinarians and avian behaviourists. This health information is great.

Safety Articles Parrots are unlike many other pets and have special needs and safety concerns. From articles about what foods can and can't be eaten to travel with your bird, emergency preparedness, dangerous houseplants (birds will chew most anything), etc... this magazine usually has at least one educational article about safety.

Conservation Most parrot owners care about the viability of the wild populations of their pets. Frequently there will be an article featuring what is being done to preserve endangered parrots such as the Spix Macaw or the Red Vented Cockatoo.

Other There are also a variety of other sections including classifieds, humour and a children's section. The classified section includes a list of breeders which in my epinions is the best place to buy a pet. This section is, therefore, a very good resource if you're looking to buy. Many pet stores are a bad place to buy a parrot.

All told, for someone who has just gotten a pet bird or who is thinking of getting one, I can't recommend this magazine more. If you've had a bird for a while, its worth subscribing for a while to see if you like it, but after a while it will get a bit repetitive. Overall it is an excellent value.
