Pros: helpful information for the small guy
Cons: misguided at times, identity crisis, flawed rating system
The Bottom Line: Helpful for small business owners or those who want to be. There are useful sections so be sure to concentrate on those instead of the others which might be misleading.

Over the years, the information for small businesses has become increasingly helpful. They listened to the readers and included more profiles of small businesses. Answering so many readers’ questions constantly is almost unheard of in other magazines of any subject. Martha does it, but you have financial professionals answering financial questions and business people answering business questions.
Not so good...
1) The readers of BE, based on the questions and answers sections throughout the magazine, are not the select targets of the advertisers. Ads for luxury vehicles and elite products do not belong on pages of a magazine where a common question is, "how do I open an IRA?" or "how can I open a stock account with $50?"
2) They featured a few months ago (maybe 1 year ago?) a ranking of large businesses. One of the metrics was, "Black Advertising" or something like that. I thought it was a joke at first! They are grading companies based on whether or not they buy ads from Black Enterprise! Perhaps this is why we have "problem 1" above.
3) The movers and shakers section is unnecessary. Promotions within private companies should not be publicized in this way. If they continue to carry this feature, perhaps they can omit all promotions to or from the position of "Diversity Director" or the equivalent.
