| dkacams's Full Review: Country Living Gardener Magazine |
Country Living Gardener is a delight for serious gardening enthusiasts and
those of us who just like pretty flowers. The magazine is chock full of
gorgeous photographs of gardens in full bloom. Colonial gardens, gardens
full of abstract art, cottage gardens, and formal rose gardens fill the pages.Humorous and informative essays are interspersed between the more scenic segments.
Regular features include a handy pull out section called “Mapping a Garden” that addresses a particular garden “issue”, such as garden tools, tree planting, garden pests, and shade gardens. The Garden Plan page suggests plantings and layouts for various types of gardens: a winter border, annuals along a fence, etc. Kinder Garden features garden related projects for kids. Planting Ideas has some great decorating ideas, like shelves made out of terracotta pots and wood boards (they really look cool). Other areas covered are new seed varieties, herbs, garden books, and whimsical garden-y products like ceramic flowers or unusual vases.
Some of Country Living Gardener is a little more scientific than I need, with full Latin plant names and some harder to find species. This would probably be useful for Serious Gardeners and those who order from one of the many specialty seed catalogs that advertise in the back of the magazine. I tend to buy flowers by the way they look : bright pink "brain" (I think it's a celosia) flowers, black eyed Susans, etc. My local nursery doesn’t label plants “scientifically”, so I have found it a little difficult to implement some of the garden ideas included in Gardener. The zone hardiness map is very handy, though.
I originally received Country Living Gardener as a gift, and renewed it this year. I probably won’t get it again, but I’ve made a handy binder full of the useful tips and spectacular gardens described to inspire me next spring. For those who have a passion for plants or just enjoy the natural beauty of a nasturtium in bloom, Country Living Gardener is a great magazine.
