| protoguy's Full Review: Country Living Gardener Magazine |
While shopping at Home Depot, I saw this magazine on the shelf at the register and picked it up to see if I might buy it. Never one to rely on 'point of purchase' marketing tactics and since the lines at Home Depot were a little long, I poured through a good amount of the magazine while waiting.
I decided to get it. I read quite a bit of it that evening and was quite pleased with it. The cover of the magazine doesn't inspire much interest. It looks kind of like a People Magazine for gardeners. Too many blurbs on the cover hiding the photograph. I am always leery of too much info on the cover. I guess I don't like mags screaming to be bought. I like subtlety.
There is a good amount of information inside of Country Living Gardener. Reviews of products, articles on the latest and hottest plants this season. Help on how to choose plants for your particular area, and what I have found lacking in some gardening mags: a legend of what zone is what. Basically a map of the US laid out with the zones. This legend is in every month as far as I can tell.
I have found that places like Home Depot are happy to sell you raspberry plants or pear trees, regardless of the fact they will die in Florida's climate. So it's good to know the zone and what it means.
One particular article I found interesting, in the Oct 1999 issue was on edible flowers. Pineapple Sage in particular. With it's pineapple taste and it's brilliant red hue, it would make a great addition to fruit salads or even green salads. I suspect it might even be good candied or sugared like some other flowers are.
There are also interesting features on creating things for and with your garden items. One article on how to create lanterns from gourds or squash was interesting.
With lots of info and great photos along with scads of advice, from how to layout your garden to storing bulbs till next spring, Country Living Gardener is a welcome addition to the gardening mag lineup as well as a nice compliment to it's parent magazine, Country Living.
