| NoMattrWht's Full Review: Country Living Gardener Magazine |
Roses, zinnias, lilies, hydrangeas, impatiens, daisies, blackeyed susans, petunias, ahhh.... I'm always a little bummed this time of year as I watch my garden wilt and wither away to the Philadelphia cold November air. There is a rose or two still blooming, and my alyssum is brightening the purple garden. Missing the flowers, the gardens, I flip open the cover of my favorite magazine... Country Living's Gardener.
This magazine is not a Home and Garden magazine. There are no pictures of brand new $80,000.00 kitchens I will never be able to afford. The only blue print-like drawings this magazine has is suggestions on say....a Butterfly garden, suggesting certain flowers that attract butterflies...labeling the flowers, drawing you the finished garden.
Inside Country Living's Gardener are pages and pages of beautiful gardens, some elaborate and large, always inspiring me, giving me ideas and information for my own gardens. There are many sections in the magazine, each concentrating on something different, Herbs, veggies, mapping a garden, garden plan, planting ideas, all in the family, which is always one of my favorite articles. It basically talks about different flowers of the same family, showing you several pictures, that accompany the plethora of information such as what zones the flowers thrive in, if it needs specific soil, whether it needs a lot of light or is it a shade plant, how many different varieties there are, best time to plant, when it blooms, perennial, or annual...etc.
One thing I noticed right away when I first subscribed to this magazine years ago, is that it is not over-run with advertisements. The ones they do have, all have to do with gardening, there is usually an allergy medicine advertisement in each issue, but thats acceptable, since a lot of people, including myself, are allergic to pollen.
Working in a Nursery (plants, not babies) I read many gardening magazines and books... I have not found a better magazine directed to us gardeners. Every month, every issue is a keeper. They also have a website ( go figure- doesn't everyone now a days?) http://CL-GARDENER.com
At $3.95 an issue it's definitely worth a look-see.
