Take the Wild West, give it a good scrub, spray it with deodorant, liberally apply lipgloss, and you have Cowboys and Indians.
This is the Wild West as redesigned by Gucci and Versace. But while it is so darn glossy it would blind your average cowboy if the sun shone on it, I must admit I never miss an issue.
I even bought the one with Christie Brinkley on the cover, wearing designer jeans so tight she would never have got her leg over the horse. I bought the issue with Michael Greyeyes preening himself through the most insufferably self important interview I have ever read.
I buy Cowboys and Indians and recommend it to other western buffs, because amongst this fluff are some of the the most memorable words and images ever produced about the west.
One article that sums up the appeal of Cowboys and Indians appeared in the March 1988 edition. Called Indians of the Wild West Shows, by Richard Slatta, it told the story of Native Americans who travelled to Europe with Buffalo Bill and others.
This well written piece, illustrated with some fine pictures of the period, held my attention.
Likewise a story in a later issue, on the Wild West Buffs of England, who dress as native americans and legendary western figures and meet at conventions all over the country.
I confess I really enjoy the lavish product pages and ads. Cowboys and Indians has the quirkiest of fashion pages, since all the gear is western, yet it is presented like high fashion.
Some of it deserves to be, worn as it is with spectacular Indian jewelry and draped on models who would be a knockout on any catwalk.
The latest edition, October 2000, features another actor who likes to get his boots dirty back at the ranch, Tommy Lee Jones. The writer, Eric O'Keefe, maintains the high standard expected of this magazine.
More newsworthy is Les Daly's Indian Gambling, the story of a group of Taos Pueblo residents who slung a spanner in the mighty cogs of a $40 million gambling casino planned to be built on their land.
It's a powerful, fact-packed read that has you cheering for the Taos Davids who take on the casino Goliaths.
Oh yes, and there is sumptuous western fashion, glorious lip glossed western images that would never have graced a saloon, but who cares?
This is the west of myth and legend as well as reality, and Cowboys and Indians pulls out all the stops to feast the eyes.
Fortunately its editors also know a damn good article when they see it.
You can catch some of these words and images at the website
http://www.cowboysindians.com/ and read up the archives there as well, but do buy the magazine if you love the west, and lose yourself in dreams and dust.
