I have been reading this magazine, when I can find it, for about 5 or 6 years now. It has excellent material for lesbians or bisexual women, including content on Art, Music, Reading, Travel, and family issues. Of course, it also includes the healthy dose of political issues as well. but I think my all-time favorite article to date is one that was written a few years back (around the time Melissa Etheridge and her lady had a baby) about gays and lesbians becoming parents, and the difficulties they face. Overall, I would say this is one of the most well-written, well-edited magazines I have come across, of any genre. Not even a good ironing could make it straight!
I think I like the best about it is that it does not take a hardline approach as to what attitude a lesbian should have, who they should associate with, or what kind of politics they should pursue. It is written in a very open-minded manner, kind of a "Free To Be" attitude.
I found that there are quite a few advertisements in with everything else, but almost all of them are directed towards women in general, or lesbians in specific. Many of these are for women's retreats or lesbian-pride items, which do not seem to have much of a market in other publications. In view of the fact that there are not many widely popular lesbian magazines, I feel that the amount of advertising is appropriate.
I think the only minor complaint I may have about this magazine, is that when they cover public figures, it can sometimes seem like a re-hashing of the same ones over and over again. (i.e. Melissa Etheridge, Ellen and Anne, k.d. lang, etc). However, in consideration that there are not exactly thousands of highly-public lesbians leaping out of the closet everyday, I suppose this can be understood.
Having had problems finding a newsstand copy over the past few months, I recently checked out the website (www.curvemagazine.com) to see what is current. I found the available excerpts of the Sinead O'Connor interview piqued my curiosity. There is also an excellent interview - entitled "Sexual Healing" - which discusses the effects of sexual abuse, its repercussions, and ways some women deal with it. There also is a good bit of coverage on the recent Vermont "separate-but-equal" ruling about gay and lesbian life-partnerships being recognized. The magazine seems to be getting better and better with age.
And, I think, in light of my recent troubles finding it in stores, I may just go ahead and get that subscription I have been considering for so long.
