The Bottom Line: This magazine is a must have subscription for any sports fan. It gets you closer to the game and closer to the lives of your favorite athletes.
ronricoherra's Full Review: ESPN Magazine Subscription
The title presents an age old question. However, it is not ESPN's unusual dimensions that catches the eye of readers but its bold predictions, articles, and analysis. I love sections like THE LIFE that take you closer to your favorite athletes.
I must admit I receive both Sports Illustrated and ESPN the magazine in the mail. I love to read while I am eating or relaxing, so getting my magazines always makes me happy, but I think I am starting to take a little more of a shine to ESPN. Although, Sports Illustrated may have more skillfully written and well put together articles, but ESPN the magazine has those countless stats, charts, and graphs that make the reading experience more enjoyable.
ESPN is just like its parent television station. They use wit and those outlandish statistics that attract viewers to sell their products. However, I believe that this technique speaks more to a younger generation of sports fans. ESPN may in fact be closer to the magazine Slam than SI. Older subscribers might prefer the distinguished and well written articles that Sports Illustrated brings to the table, but for folks of my generation the shorter articles and better features put ESPN over the top.
All in all, ESPN put their magazine together to be a corollary to their famous and long successful counterpart instead of trying to converse to Sports Illustrated's style. It all boils down to what you prefer. Do you enjoy the animated and goofy stats of ESPN and the player contacts that they use in their stories, or do you prefer the distinguished sports coverage and dignified articles of Sports Illustrated. Whatever you choose, you are getting a great magazine.
