This magazine should not be called ESPN the Magazine, it should be called ESPNmag.com. Most of the articles are extremely brief and leave the reader looking for a link to click for the rest of the article. Unfortunately, because it’s in print, there is no link. In addition to the brief articles, there are actually headline-like snippets that are reminiscent of a Web site’s clickable links. However, that is all there is! No link, no “see page…”, no nothing, just the tease of an article with no follow through.
Feature Articles
Okay, so on rare occasions ESPN the Magazine does come though with a satisfactorily complete article that can actually be read in the magazine. They do offer a nice variety, covering all sports. While I have yet to see an article I would term in-depth, what they do have appears to have been written by someone who at least attended college. One big plus (or minus, depends on how you feel about the man), is that they have Dick Vitale assisting on the college hoops coverage.
Overall Quality
I will say that ESPN the Magazine is a high quality magazine. It has superior photography. Of course, with two networks covering sports 24 hours a day, seven days a week, how can you not have your choice of the best shots available? They also print the magazine on a nice, high quality, glossy stock. They are also have some of the best guest authors in any sports magazine. Too bad they don’t let them write to their ability.
Price/Value
At $3.99 an issue I expect far better than I get in ESPN the Magazine. It is a 130 page advertisement for ESPNmag.com. If their articles were complete, the quality of the magazine is worthy of the price tag. Unfortunately, the parent company, Di$ney, seems to think that their readers don’t deserve to get what they are paying for. I usually enjoy myself much more when partaking in other Di$ney products as they empty my wallet. With this magazine, I just feel taken.
The Bottom Line
Do we really need to go here? As you have no doubt guessed by now, I can not recommend this magazine. Unless, of course, you are a huge sports fan, with plenty of expendable cash, who reads magazines while they surf the web and owns tons of Di$ney stock. I just can’t see recommending a prolonged advertisement that you have to pay for to anyone.
