| Writerip's Full Review: Family Life Magazine |
The publishers of Parenting Magazine have another hit on their hands with Family Life Magazine. And who would expect anything different? The same standards of journalism and quality information are adhered to in this magazine for families with children 12 and under. Editor-in-chief Peter Herbst heads a staff of capable and compassionate writers, dedicated to delivering news, features, and ideas that are wholesome, educational, and fun.
Departments include an opening letter from the editor. This is often peppered with tidbits from his own family life experiences, which makes him not only a credible source, but an equal of sorts. "Your Letters" features comments and suggestions from readers. "Family Matters News and Views" keeps parents updated on the latest in information regarding education, political issues, social issues, and a variety of other important points.
Mom's Health is an interesting department, as it often features unusual maladies that moms suffer from, as well as providing tried and true remedies for those more common ailments--like exhaustion and lack of proper exercise and nutrition!
Travel is my favorite department. It often features little-known destinations that would make excellent family vacation sites. It almost always incorporates education into travel, and offers tips for traveling with infants through pre-teens that can saves a parent's sanity. I have used many of the tips from Family Life's travel section throughout the years.
An etiquette column is appreciated by most parents these days, as sometimes children get them into less than spectacular social situations. For example, if your child has been invited to a birthday party, and you learn that everyone else who has been invited will be lavishing a $50 gift upon the birthday boy or girl---should you in turn feel obliged to follow suit? Read the magazine and you'll hear what the experts say!
A column where parents communicate with one another is another fantastic section. Parents learn more and receive more genuine support from their peers than from any other source.
There are typically suggestions for healthy and easy-to-prepare meals--often intended to include the children in the preparation. I got my best vegetarian chili recipe from Family Life about a year and a half ago!
Toward the end of the magazine, there are excellent reviews on the latest in children's books, videos, and computer games. I always enjoy hearing what professionals have to say regarding the educational quality of these products. It is also very helpful when trying to discern age-appropriateness.
If you have a child between 1 and 12, there are many things that will be of interest to you in Family Life. If you're at all like my family, once you've read it, your kids will grab it and attempt the creative craft ideas. Maybe they'll even make you dinner!
