zzJulia's Full Review: Fitness Magazine Subscription
Fitness has really replaced Shape magazine in my house. I really enjoy health and fitness magazines and find they offer interesting articles on nutrition, as well as different approaches to exercise. Shape was a magazine that I used to rely on for physically challenging workout suggestions, but it has devolved into more of a fluff beauty type publication lately.
Thank goodness for Fitness magazine.
The layout is an interesting mix of subjects, hence their theme "Mind, Body & Spirit."
fitness beauty health diet/nutrition mind/spirit relationships style
Of all these sections, I find fitness and diet to be the most interesting and useful. There's usually a short celebrity segment called "How She Got That Body" where they outline the workout regime of a well known and fit actress. February was Jolene Blalock for you Trekkies out there! This short article is followed by "Celebrity Trainer" where the yoga coach for Meg Ryan or the sculpting coach for Minnie Driver talks about how they helped the actress condition for a particular movie role or come back from an injury. These are a bit fluffy, but definitely interesting from the perspective that it takes discipline to look good.
The body makeover plans are also very good in that they are 30 day plans, which don't promise instant weight loss, but are instead to help you establish long term exercise habits.
Usually, these workouts have a good mix of cardio suggestions paired with sculpting moves. Sometimes the workouts do require accessories such as stability balls, mats, step benches, light weights, therabands or exercise tubing.
The diet/nutrition segment usually has helpful articles such as the vitamin/mineral content of certain foods and which parts of the body they nourish. For example, I never thought about copper much, but this mineral is critical for strengthening joints, and it can be found from peanuts, liver or clams. Ok, maybe you don't care about copper, but I thought it was interesting.
The fashion segment is ludicrous. One month was a several page spread about stripes. Whatever. Another month the article was about jacket lengths. I've said it before in my review of HEALTH magazine and I'll say it again, I'll buy Glamour if I want fashion tips.
In Summary
This magazine is perfect for people who are interested in keeping their workout routines fresh and interesting. Also, it's ideal for people who have short attention spans as none of the articles are very long. I realize that some of the other reviews in this section seem to think the magazine is targeted at 28 year olds, but I disagree. If enjoyment of reading short articles with colorful photos means you are young, then I guess that's correct. However, I suspect that even at age 40 a person could stand to learn a thing or two about exercise and nutrition and enjoy the pictures.
I work out about 5 to 6 hours a week and enjoy incorporating suggestions to boost my performance from this magazine. Also, the recipes have been great and keep me from getting bored with my grocery routine.
