| dhricenak's Full Review: Fortean Times Magazine |
Fortean Times is unique. So unique that the few stores that carry don't really know where to shelve it. If you're lucky enough to find it at all it may be with New Age, science, or alternate lifestyle magazines. It is all of these and yet not really any of them. Let's look at issue 167, the last one I picked up. As always there is an editorial followed by "Strange Days", a roundup of the latest weird news from all over, including a couple of my favorite features, "Alien Zoo," about new animal discoveries, "Mythconceptions," debunking popular beliefs (this month's is the alleged deadliness of hornet stings), and of course "Strange Deaths." Next come the three main feature articles. The lead is a discussion of the exotic big cats that been reported roaming Britain for the past 40 years, scaring people, killing livestock, but almost never getting caught. This is followed by the first of a two-part piece about Prince Magog, a 12th-century Welshman who may have gotten to America before Columbus, and a discussion of whether it's really possible for a sleepwalker to commit murder. That's not all. there are also shorter Forum articles, reader letters, book, film, and game reviews,Hunt Emerson's "Phenomenomix", and a Fortean gossip column called "the Hierophant." All of the above is remarkably balanced. Skeptics and believers both get a voice, and there is a touch of sometimes sick humor. My only complaint is the lagtime in American distribution. According to the website issue 170 is already out in Britain. But if you're patient and can find a copy or afford to subscribe Fortean Times is well worth the price.
