| uglyamerican's Full Review: Fortean Times Magazine |
Fortean Times is the magazine for anyone who's ever wondered just how weird this world is. A British import, it shares that country's taste for applied eccentricity, and combines it with a worldview of interested skepticism. FT tries to believe in nothing, and at the same time present everything.
West African penis shrinking scares, alien posession of the English Royal Family, the life of rocket scientist/occultist/L. Ron Hubbard drinking buddy Jack Parsons, the Process Church, and mysterious 4000+ year old pyramids found off the coast of Japan all share space in the pages of Fortean Times with much more mundane items (relatively speaking) like ironic deaths, coincdences & synchronicities, naughty road signs, and impressively odd tales of human behavior.
The true strength of this magazine lies in it's letter column, though. Contained therein is a free-for-all of impressive rantings from yobbos all over the UK, America and the world about anything & everything paranormal. If you've wanted the opinions of radar scientists on catching radar waves on film, of house owners on distracting poltergeists & whether a video intercom on a London apartment building contains a time warp documenting 19th century London, this is the place to read about it, all in 3 paragraphs no less.
As far as flaws, the only one I can think of is the lack of a consistent tone. Although FT attempts to be skeptical, occasionally it slips into slackjawed gulibillity that you'd usually expect from a crystal selling leftover hippie. C'mon editors, do your work and ban the stink of patchouli oil from this magazine...
And do I really need to mention that this kicks the Weekly World News' *ss?
