| RedSlurpee's Full Review: Fortean Times Magazine |
I am three issues into my newfound Fortean Times addiction. I love the weird news tidbits that it covers, & I also love the more in-depth feature articles. I think a big part of my enjoyment of this magazine is the tone of the writing, which is more about reporting the facts while being entertained by the peculiarity of the strange world we live in, without promoting a New-Agey agenda or a hard-science-skeptic agenda.
When I was 12 or so I read the Weekly World News tabloid, with it's coverage of Bat Child & bizarre miracles. Of course I knew it was junk, but it was entertaining. Fortean Times is a more-grown-up appeal to the same appetite for weirdness, but without the fakery. Goodness knows there's enough weirdness in the world without having to fabricate it....& thank goodness for that!
This isn't a New Age-y magazine, nor a Tinfoil Hat Alien Update newsletter. It's just the perfect brain-fodder for folks like me who'd rather prattle on at parties about rains of fish & chupacabras than whether or not George Clooney should have a kid.
I just wish there was a U.S. version of FT, because the ads & announcements of events look interesting, but they're all UK-centered, so if I want to buy a teeshirt or something, it's going to cost a pretty penny.
