Gentleman -- a man whose conduct conforms to a high standard of propriety or correct behavior.
Having worked in men’s clothing and now as a retailer of fine furniture, it is important for me professionally to be as fashion conscious as possible. Knowing what’s in and what’s out is an important part of my daily life and could affect my way of life. There are certain “personal rules” I live by and then I try to incorporate today’s style and fashion as to fit into what I feel comfortable.
I have read a few copies of GQ and have been pleasantly surprised by its amount of content though disappointed by it’s lack of fashion editorials. I sighed a sigh of relief when I saw the May issue of GQ with a GUY on the cover and no mention of sex—and again this month, the same. This is GENTLEman’s Quarterly, not Horny Bastard Magazine and I am hoping we will be seeing a resurgence of what is good about this magazine—men & men’s fashion.
At $1/issue subscription price it is easy to subscribe to GQ and not feel as though you have squandered $12.
Flipping through the magazine in the store, one might find that the 250 pages of GQ are comprised of numerous amounts of advertising. While one may find this to be a negative hindrance, I personally like to see what Ralph Lauren or Donna Karran have to offer the gents in this coming season. Linen suits and plaid & stripes uugghh I thought we were rid of these things! Dig deeper into the magazine and you find great articles and funny antic dotes.
June’s issue issues a 44 page Summer Style section for those needing to buy for the 4th of July summer season. Another great article that I found very useful was a spread on how, when, and how much to tip. This IS GQ and I do believe that some of the tipping procedures are a little over the top, but isn’t everything.
What’s missing from this magazine is FASHION. How I would love to see articles on do’s and dont’s of men’s fashion. What’s hot and what’s not. Designers and their new latest greatest creations (again I have to go to the ads to find such things). Some say they’d run out of things to write about or that it would become too repetitive. To that I have to say BULL. If ANYONE can accurately describe to me what is business casual or how one is to dress casual and still have an aura of gentlemanliness please let me know! Is blue on blue such a faux pas or can it be pulled off? And where are the articles on food? Proper hosting of a group of friends can determine much about one’s self – and area where I am not an expert.
I had a friend of mine say “this magazine is too stuffy”. I have to totally and wholeheartedly disagree. Tear out the pages of DKNY, POLO, CK, MOVADO, and GUCCI and you will find a magazine that not only caters to the upper-middle class but to a majority of men out there today. Whether this is a good or bad thing is something you will have to decide.
Go ahead and find a local magazine stand and shell out the $3 for an issue and decide for yourself. The price allows for GQ’s misfortunes though I don’t know how much more I would shell out for it to be more refined.
