| kornell_911's Full Review: Gear Magazine |
I agree with DR215's comments that Gear boasts cutting edge photography. I picked up this months issue not expecting much, but came out with a lot more. Lots of great pics, very interesting, original articles, and cool tech gadgets.
I like the pics
Gear boasts an average 112 pages (pretty skimpy compared to other men's magazines like Maxim, GQ, Vanity Fair, and the like) but its pictures are simply amazing. There are, of course, provocative pictures of almost naked women, but there are also other breath taking pics.
Take for example this month's issue: a b and w picture of Jay-Z. Doesn't seem like much when you first look at it, but on closer look the photograph is well done. His eyes are beedy, and his demeanor uneasy. Many other photographs in the magazine focus on the models' eyes. Their eyes make the pictures all that much better. Although Maxim gets the "name" models, Gear's pictures are much much better than its counterparts.
In a recent issue, Gear boasted a provocative, naked clad Brandi Chastain.
Content
The magazine, as mentioned above, is only 112 pages, but there is a lot of content. The type set is small so there is a lot of writing on the pages. The articles are well written and original; they accompany the amazing pics very well.
This month's issue features an in-depth article about the man who put models' eggs for sale over the internet and sparked a national outcry. A well researched, interesting read.
Another article features and follows a US immigration officer through his patrol of the US-Mexican border. Another very good read accompanied by thrilling pictures.
GAdgets
There is only one page dedicated to gadgets, and the gadgets reviewed are the ones I've already seen and already dismayed as "too pricey and not worth the buy". Gear's "Toy Page" lacks significant ooomph, and cannot compare to other such techie magazines featuring cool and chic toys of the future.
Fashion
After all, the magazine is named GEAR. However, this magazine should be called amazingly good pictures. There is a gear section in the back, but again, (like the Toys section) it does not compare to the likes of any the competing fashion/men's magazines...not even Details.
OVERALL
I can just look at the pictures all day long. They are that compelling. Granted I am only an amateur photographer, my eyes do not deceive me when I see good art work. Gear is not good art work , but great art work. Buy if you are looking for cutting-edge photography and interesting articles. Avoid if you are looking for more interesting articles, more content, more mainstream "men's stuff" (Maxim).
