Pros: Good photos of women. Entertaining two minute reads. Teens seem to love it!
Cons: Although Glamour does offer many opportunities to celebreties and models, it does not personify a positve role model for our women today. I know, I know... I'm taking it too serious!
I admit it, I am a sucker for free anything. I accepted an offer from Enews.com for a free ninety day trial of Glamour. "Wow," I said. A good price on a magazine I devoured when I was younger. Younger being the key word here. As a mom of two (one a very impressionable six year old girl going on seventeen) I am selective with my magazines.
The first issue arrived last month. It had a special swimsuit feature (does the word centerfold mean anything to anyone else out there?) Both my mailman and my husband commented on the cover of last months issue.... a very voluptuous model in a scrap swimsuit with very provocative cut outs. Used to their teasing, I took my magazine and claimed "mine" so that they would know its for me. (Not for their entertainment.) Half way through the magazine, I noticed that it might have been designed for the male... the swimsuit feature was very sexy with racy suits I would never be able to wear. The poses were hot and spicy and tailored to stimulate. I asked my hubby: Is this something you would expect from a womans magazine? His reply: "Well, I don't know honey, I may have to take a closer look..." ha ha ha!
The second issue arrived yesterday. (After I had already cancelled the magazine!) It was more of the same: Articles advertising over priced designer clothing for paper thin models dressed to kill. (Although one tiny article did cover tilted uterus and your pregnancy. That one was interesting, but I have to investigate it elsewhere as I do not know how reliable their information is.) A few of their articles caught my eye.. and since I knew I would review this, I read it cover to cover. Not too much substance... and I felt I wasted my time. There were more articles about sex, getting along with family, manners and so on. Tons of fashions... and a few contests to win if you enter.
To sum up my two months experience with my now cancelled subscription: Not worth my time. Most likely, not worth your time....Unless.....
1) You are a model struck teen looking for outrageously priced fashion and the right look for this month.
2) You are a girl crazy male looking for a very soft, soft form of artful "entertainment." (Check out last months swimsuit issue-you'll love it!)
3) You have the time to waste on fluff piece articles on issues whose advice you would never question. Take for instance: How to improve your sex life; getting along with your family; Breast exams; The perfect swimsuit for your body; A sexier pregnancy; and so on.)
The bottom line, in my humble opinion is that Glamour is a form of entertainment, not a resource for good, solid information. I do not see any real harm for a consenting adult to read this magazine. However, I am not sure that providing our young women with this type of material is really doing their self image any good. Neither does it truly represent the values of relationships in an uplifting way. Some would say that I am over analysing this magazine... as it is written for entertainment. I say: Why can't I have it both ways? Give me good, informative articles and entertain me with whats important to me, today.
