I recently ended my subscription to Golf Illustrated after a two-year trial. The price wasn’t bad and neither was some of the content. I particularly enjoyed some of the instructional pieces.
The problem was the magazine’s overall cheap feel compared to the rest of the mainstream golf magazines. For starters, it is still staple-bound and very thin. It seems like I can get through it in less than 30 minutes. One would think the oldest golf magazine would be thicker since it only comes out every 2 months. Also, the font that they use for their articles is pretty awkward. I’m not sure what it is, but it is pretty pale compared to other magazines. Another thing is that the instructors and experts that contribute to the magazine are not as well known as the ones in other magazines like Golf Digest and Golf Magazine. And lastly, their product articles seem to not be as subjective as those in other magazines. They seem like just glorified advertisements that never say anything bad about a product.
I gave Golf Illustrated a try and, while they aren’t the worst I’ve read, they just don’t match up to the big boys for about the same price. I’m sticking with Golf Digest and Golf Magazine for better layout and content, especially the instructional pieces. Also, they both are book-bound and look nice.
