In all honesty, I didn't know exactly what Humpty Dumpty's magazine was when I ordered it. I had gotten an offer from my credit card company for a free 3 issue subscription to a magazine. Looking down the list of magazines they were offering, I didn't see anything of interest until Humpty Dumpty's caught my eye. I was intrigued by the title although, as I mentioned, I had no idea what it was. Being the adventurous type, I decided to take a chance and order it.
Upon receiving my first issue, the first thing I noticed about it was that this is a magazine for little kids (ages 4 - 6). I have to admit that I was a little disappointed at this since I have already exceeded this age range by a couple dozen years or so. But the cover art was very attractive so I was enticed to open it and see what was inside.
Although the magazine is only about 36 pages long, it's filled with poems, stories, colorful illustrations, photos, puzzles, activities, and educational tidbits. The magazine encourages kids to be active both physically and mentally and helps to promote healthy parent/child relationships by offering opportunities for parents to get involved as well. Parents will need to read the poems and stories to younger kids who are unable to read by themselves and many of the activities suggested in the magazine require parental assistance. Kids can also contribute to the magazine by sending in their own drawing and see it published in the "You Draw The Pictures" section. There's also the "Ask Dr. Cory" section where parents can submit questions about child health. In the end, I was fully entertained and impressed by the positive virtues of this magazine.
I only have two criticisms about Humpty Dumpty's. First, is that the regular subscription price is $25.95 per year. Although in reality, the subscription insert card offers it at $15.92 per year but still...which brings me to my second criticism, you only get 8 issues per year, which means that it's about two bucks an issue. I really think this should be a monthly magazine and I don't see why they couldn't publish 12 issues per year. But then, I'm not in the magazine publishing business so what do I know?
