The first time I read an InStyle magazine, I knew it was the fashion magazine for me. For one thing, I’ve grown pretty tired of what I perceive as the snooty attitude of magazines like Vogue and Harper’s. I live in Iowa, for God’s sake. A lot of the country DOES live in the midwest. We don’t shop in New York and we may not even shop in Chicago, but some of us are still somewhat interested in fashion trends. InStyle gives those of us who are fashion challenged by dint of location or personality the ability to connect with the trends. InStyle lets us know where we can buy the stuff they’re showing, not on the back pages of the magazine in tiny print, but right there on the page, with phone numbers and web addresses. If we wanted to (and if we had $500 for a shirt), we could order this stuff, no problem.
I really enjoy the fact that InStyle is routinely as thick as a short novel. Sure, it’s stuffed with ads, but it takes time even to flip through ads. Besides, I would encourage people to stop and take a look at some of the ads. Some of them are just as interesting as the rest of the magazine content. I just really enjoy a magazine that takes me a couple of days to get through. This month, for instance, there must have been information and pictures about and from 50 different stars’ weddings. It’s hard to get tired of looking at wedding stuff.
InStyle also has added features other magazines don’t have. There is more information about interior design, for example, and they always take you inside some star’s house (or one of his/her houses) to show you some different ideas about decorating. I doubt I’ll ever have enough money to decorate like that, but it’s just nice to look at something beautiful from time to time. I feel the same way about most of the clothing they show. The makeup is somewhat more within my reach, but I’ll probably end up sticking with Clinique in any case.
The other feature I enjoy is the recipe section. Every month, there’s some theme they’re celebrating, and they give you all the details on how to put together a meal for that theme. These meals are generally do-able by the general population, and they’re pretty gourmet little setups. I’m always impressed.
The one thing I could do without in InStyle is the Man of Style section. Bo-ring. Personally, I don’t think anybody even notices different stars’ “styles” because the big designers just clap their idea of trendy on the stars’ backs and send them out to places where InStyle can photograph them, like movie premieres. And I particularly do not care about the “style” of male actors. The public never sees them in their own clothing anyway. The one thing I’m glad InStyle does not feature is articles on how to please your man and keep your sex life going well into your 80s, etc.
All in all, I really look forward to receiving this magazine. It’s my favorite, outside of The New Yorker. InStyle isn’t intellectual, no, and it’s not as fancy as some of the other fashion magazines, but as far as I’m concerned, the marked similarities among all of those magazines are their downfall.
For those who enjoy the finer things in life, STYLE combines all that is beautiful, unique and inspiring in Baltimore. Each stunning photo-packed issu...More at Magazines.com
