| KimJ's Full Review: Jump Magazine |
My boyfriend received this magazine as a free subscription to some Internet thing he belongs to. JUMP magazine, for girls who dare to be real. Well, that's their slogan. I've never heard of this magazine before but Hey, I'm willing to give anything a fair chance. The first issue I received was the Oct/Nov 2000 issue. On the cover, of course, is a beautiful perfectly shaped girl (not so sure if she is famous or not). Anyway, just like all of the other girlie magazines. As I ventured to read along in the magazine I assumed that it was targeted for younger girls than myself (I'm 19). I'm going to say, so far, that its marketed toward 14-16 year old girls.
Now, I start to read the articles. The first one I read is titled "Better Late than Never." Sounds good and all but accompanied by this article is an illustration of condoms, making out illustrations along with (more normal) tampons, pubic hairs (am I allowed to say that?) and bras. No biggie, I suppose. Maybe not! Now mind you, I am assuming this magazine is targeting 14-16 year old girls. I read on. . .this article is about a girl who develops much slower than all her friends and how all her friends were having sex and making out. The author goes on to say "in college I'm going to have Sex" very bluntly. Not something for a 14-16 year old girl to be reading. In the end of course, she does wait, (after making out with a bunch of guys and having "near sex experiences")
So, is that something 14-16v year old girls should be reading about???
Another article I read was titled "A boy on Boobs." This article is basically about what kind of Boobs boys like. Oh, and don't try to hide them under that XXL tee-shirt, we can still see them. Shocked me! Once again, should younger girls be concerned (or even older girls) what boys think of their "boobs." Other little articles explain what to do to increase your bustline. It contains secrets that the stars use. . .of course they say "don't try this at home" but really, do you think they will listen?
Another thing that troubled me about this magazine is their emphasis on weight. Although in one part they do say that skinny is not healthy another part they are telling girls to watch what they eat when the go to the movies. Come on! They are 14!
This magazine also contains all the beauty tips and fashion do's and don'ts. It has celebrity insight and music news as well.
I would not want my teenage daughter reading this magazine. It is way too involved for girls of such a young age. Just let them be them and ask their Mom these questions!
