I have held my subscription to KIDS Discover Magazine, ever since 2 years ago, when my oldest son took a HUGE interest to one of their magazines in a doctors office waiting room. I still remember the very magazine, because we still have it. It was on "Astronauts" and my son was so enthralled with this magazine, that the doctor herself came out and told my son that he could take it home and keep it.
The initial cost of subscribing to KIDS Discover Magazine is $19.95 for 10 issues. (As time goes on and your renew your subscription, deals will be offered to you that make it a little bit cheaper.) But even at $2.00 a magazine, I will be happy to stand behind the fact that these magazines are MORE than worth that amount. To be honest, I would even pay $3.00 or more per issue if that were the cost. Each Fully Illustrated magazine is approx. 19-20 pages long and filled with learning, interesting facts and fun. My words can not do this magazine justice.
What The Magazines Consists Of-
Each Issue has a main topic. From History, Animals, Insects, People, Etc... These magazines are a wealth of information that are written in a way that your child will not only understand and be able to follow along with ease, but will learn so much about our world and the people around us.
An Example I would like to give is on one of the most recent issues we received. It was on Hawaii. In this issue, your child will learn everything from information about the State, Animals and Insects that live on the different islands, Ancient legends, Famous People from Hawaii, the different Islands, What a Luau is and how to have your own, as well as will teach your child how to Hula is 36 EASY (picture by picture) steps! : )
You will also find little games and quizzes for your child throughout each issue. Your child can put his/her knowledge to the test to see how much he/she has learned.
Topics-
Throughout our time of subscribing to this magazine we have been able to experience a wide variety of topics. Following are a list of some of the topics that we have received. I decided to list these to give you a better idea of what kind of information and topics that they cover in these magazines. You would be amazed at how much your child can learn from these magazines. I even enjoy reading them and have learned so much myself. Here are a list of some of the Issues that we have received:
•Martin Luther King, Jr.
•Incas
•Venice
•Washington
•Microbes
•Astronauts
•Water
•World War 2
•Photography
•Dogs
•DNA
•Thomas Edison
•Rain Forests
•Eyes
•20thy Century
•Shakespeare
•Maps
•Language
•Mesopotamia
•Pioneers
•Detectives
•Robots
•Blood
Just to name a few. As you can see from that list, they cover a very WIDE variety and range of topics. Each written and geared for the learning level of a child. Awesome... I have never seen anything like them.
Age Level-
I am not certain of the exact age that these books would be appropriate for, but if I had to guess, I would say from 8 years up. My son (who is now 10 years old) has been reading them since he was 8, so that is what I am basing my opinion on as far to the age range. Of course every child is different as far as their ability to read and comprehend information, so putting an exact range would be kind of hard. Only you as a parent would be able to judge that.
I have even noticed though that although my 4 1/2 year old is obviously way too young to read, he listens with interest as my oldest son, explains things to us that he as learned in the magazine. So even if your child is not yet at the reading level, having a older sibling or parent to read to them may even spark their interest and teach them a thing or two.
Pictures-
The pictures in KIDS Discover Magazine are amazing! So clear and vivid. You will see everything from close ups of insects to birds eye views of HUGE Islands. KIDS Discover Magazine takes your child with them (through their pictures) as they journey and explore many different things.
One of the most interesting issues that we have received so far was one on Robots. In this issue, they show you and talk about hundreds of different robots from TV Robots to Real Life Robots. You will be amazed at how they make Robotic Insects and Robotic Droids. I never had a clue how advanced our technology really was until we read this edition on Robots. Wow!!! It is VERY interesting. This would have to be the one magazine that sparked my sons interest the most, and if you could see the condition of this one magazine (compared to the others) you would definitely know that it has been read more times than any others.
KIDS Discover Magazine was the winner of the 1996 and 1997 Parents' Choice GOLD award as well as being the 1999 EdPress winner of the Golden Lamp award in the Highest Achievement Children's Magazine Category.
Back issues and Bulk Issues-
On the very back cover of the magazine is a section that shows you which issues are available to purchase on back order. They give you the list of issues, price per issue and where to write to or call to order these editions. (As a suggestion from me, I would really recommend the issue on Astronauts and Robots.... these are awesome!!!)
Also, KIDS Discover Magazines can be ordered in Bulk. (Which would be great for a School or a Homeschooling Organization.) The more you order the cheaper the price per issue. So, keep that in mind for those who are part of a large organization. If you order all at once, each parent will be able to pay less per issue.
Overall, I cannot say enough good things about this magazine. If the publishers of KIDS Discover Magazine knew what an advocate I was for their magazine and how many people that I have convinced to give it a try, they would probably put me on their payroll! : )
KIDS Discovery Magazine has everything that you can ever want an educational magazine to have for you child and MORE. The only complaint I have is that I didn't discover them sooner. We will continue to enjoy this magazine indefinitely and hope you will give it a try too, I guarantee that you will NOT be disappointed.
