Maximum PC is Minimum PC Magazine. I bought the
May edition of this magazine thinking that it might
have some of the latest computer related information
and peripheral data within. It falls far short of what I
expected. The reports were at best boring and certainly
not pertaining to any of the computer needs that I have.
The highlight of the magazine was someone painting
their computer to blend into their color scheme. While
I detest the computer's new designs that Hewlet
Packard sport recently, I don't have the time or the
desire to undertake a overhaul of my computer by
giving it a facelift. The tower case of my C.P.U. is,
for the most part, out of sight and I would do well to
concentrate on organizing the clutter atop of my
computer desk.
=======================================
On top of that, the author of the article was pictured
throughout showing the long fingernails colored to
match the color of paint the computer would sport.
With the long fingernails, manicure and fingernail
polish the reader was given the impression that the
task was undertaken by a young co-ed. While a co-ed
could most certainly be capable to undertake such a
project I was not ready for the truth. On the last page
it was revealed that actually the individual that
undertook the project was not female at all, but rather
a weird, freaky looking guy that was decked out with
long nails that would give him the unfair advantage
in any cat fight in any bar in San Fransico.
=======================================
I did enjoy the Watchdog portion of the magazine,
however I find that I can receive the same degree of
opinionated information from P.C. World. I realize
that most magazine's opinions are highly influenced
on the basis of how many advertisements the particular
product being reported on happens to be buying in their
magazine. It makes good economic sense that they are
going to support and also give rave reviews on the
products that's manufacturers are supporting the
magazine. A good analogy is most reviewers in
epinions.com award other reviewers as being " Trusted "
by the fact that they are getting " Very Helpful "
reviews from these people on a regular basis. It just
makes good sense to support those who support you.
However, the Watchdog portion does a very good job
of explaining his viewpoints. While I didn't totally
agree with every one of his views, I did think that he
made his points well.
=======================================
Even the ads in this magazine were not what I had
hoped to find. I personally would not subscribe to this
magazine, but suggest that you call your library and see
if they carry it in their periodicals. I would believe that
they would opt for a magazine that is more widely in
demand, however they might have been given a
complimentary subscription in order to spur interest.
The copy I got was sealed in plastic. After I got the
magazine home, I found out that the plastic might not
have been to protect against the America Online CD
from becoming separated from the magazine, but
rather to keep potential buyers from seeing how
worthless the magazine will be to them.
======================================
In their defense, they state that they are attempting to
find the weak areas of their magazine and would like
to locate their strong points and accentuate them. The
magazine has a method of reporting your opinions of
the various articles and authors, and are doing so by
conducting a random drawing for an A.T.I. All-In-
Wonder Radeon TV on Demand in the May edition.
Other products to be given away in future issues.
I find it to be not worth the time since I already have
a fine T.V. card installed in my system. Still, it is
nice that they seem to care.
=======================================
I enjoy gaming during my leisure time. In as much, I
had hoped to see a strong section on new games. It was
not present. I must say in Maximum PC's defense, it
seems there has been a reduction of quality games
hitting the market of late. I would love from my
readers. Make suggestions of sites to obtain great
games or game related information. I prefer to
spend hours on end with a good role playing game
like Diablo II ( see my review on epinions.com ) than
to be glued to the television during my down time.
I just thought, there may be the games being released
and I am just buying the wrong magazines.
========================================
Bottom line: This magazine just didn't peek my interest.
