Mix magazine is an audio magazine geared mostly towards professional audio geeks who work in the industry. Lately, most of the feature articles have been devoted to recording/mixing audio for motion pictures, and the 5:1 mixing format. I guess that is where most of the money is, now that the cheap ADAT project studios have taken away much of the band/music recording business from the large studios.
Mix has a section devoted to live sound reinforcement, which focuses on one live concert each month. It goes in depth into what mics were used and how, what outboard gear was used, and so on. Most of the writing is done in a very technical style-- probably not too interesting for the average music fan.
Another monthly feature-- and my own favorite-- is the Producer's section. Each month, a famous (or not-so-famous) producer is interviewed about his/her career-- projects they've worked on, famous artists they've worked with, amusing anecdotes, and what it is a producer actually does.
Mix also has the standard gear review section, a studio news section (focusing mainly on studios in Nashville, L.A., and N.Y.), a nice "project studio of the month" section (usually some famous artist's personal studio), and a small section dedicated to mastering. The mastering section usually only contains a few blurbs about what different mastering studios have been up to, and does not contain any real useful, pertainent information.
When I first started receiving this magazine 2 years ago, it had many feature articles on recording and mixing music. It had many "recording tips" articles for drums, guitar, vocals, etc. etc. These types of articles are few and far between now, what with Mix's focus on audio for film.
If you are a professional in the field (especially audio for film), or are just interested in the technology-- this magazine is for you. If you are more interested in recording/mixing from the musician's perspective, or in project studios, mastering, etc. I would recommend Electronic Musician.
