Zephyrduck's Full Review: Model Railroader Magazine
Model Railroader is the magazine for those just getting started into the model railroading hobby. The other magazines out there, like Railway Model Craftsman and Model Railroading are too advanced, and dare I say, too pretentious for the beginner. Model Railroader doesn't hesitate to explain things in sidebars or in parenthesises so that a beginner won't feel like they've just opened up a magazine written in a foreign language.
There are two major flaws with the magazine, flaws that are substantial enough to degrade it from an excellent magazine to a pretty good one. The first is the number of ads. Sometimes, it surprises you to find that there's actually an article or two sandwiched in there.
The other flaw, one that is more serious and detrimental to the integrity of the magazine, is its poor quality reviews. Just about every single product they review is described favorably. Even though a review may mention one or several flaws, the wrap-up paragraph always implies that you need to go out there right now and buy the product. For example, when Walthers released a bad batch of out-of-scale, bowed, and otherwise distorted Amtrak Superliners in HO scale, the MR review glossed over these problems and said that they were still a must-have addition to your railroad. The universal favorable review makes me wonder how much their reviews can even be trusted. Perhaps the large number of ads spill over into the reviews? It makes one wonder.
Perhaps large amounts of ads and reviews of questionable validity don't concern you. In that case, MR is for you. I do enjoy MR for the articles, track plans, columns, and the photography, but I'll look to other sources when it comes to opinions on products.
