I'm glad I'm just hearing about it now! (Reply to this comment)

I think I would've felt pressured by reading the magazine when my child was a baby. I'm really glad to hear that you, like me, am in the solidly down-the-middle category. Lovely review!
Best regards,

I didn't get a subscription, so all articles I've read have been online or sent on by friends. I lean toward the "crunchy" side, but did find many of the articles to bit a bit TOO offensive in tone. I think there are a lot of us out there who pick and choose, but the articles I have read make me feel like I'm being condemned for not jumping wholeheartedly on the bandwagon.
Great title!

Cloth-Diapered By Necessity!!! (Reply to this comment)
by AinsleyJo
Being 50 years old, I naturally was diapered in cloth, because they didn't make the disposable kind back then in the prehistoric days! LOLOLOL
My folks subscribed to a service where they would (after shaking the worst of my output off into the toilet) trade the used diapers for new ones each day or so.
Thinking back on this, I wonder just how many future studmuffins in the Anderson area I shared my underwear with at that time! LOLOLOL
I was breastfed to nine months--and would have been longer, but my Mommy had to return to her outside-the-home job.
If she had been a SAHM, no telling how long I would have nursed!
Who knows? We just might STILL be nursing!
She's always been the kind of person who would have preferred to let me choose the time--and it's her guess that (without the work factor involved) I would have been at least three.
Sometimes, my folks and I co-slept just to be closer. Mostly, though, I had my own bed. However, my own bed was in a room we shared until I was five or six years old.
Having my own room was a kind of growing up milestone for me.
This is a magazine that I'd be interested in subscribing to!
Warmly,
AJ :o)

Your title cracked me up. People take things too seriously sometimes. I did a bit of this, a bit of that as well. (My husband still hates the cloth diapers, but I love a load of them fresh from the dryer). I nursed as long as both my kids would let me. I never co-slept, just couldn't understand how I'd ever have more kids if the first ones were in between my husband and I. Heck, I have a hard enough time keeping my 120 pound 10 month old puppy off my bed, let alone my two kids!
Great review!

Take some, leave some... (Reply to this comment)
by jillausmom
I am a very devoted Mothering reader and I too, have a higher opinion of it than you. I think as with all things, it is a take it or leave it type thing. Take what suits you and apply it or learn from it. Leave what you find irritating, preachy, or just don't agree with. I do the same with mainstream magazines. In fact, I have let my subscription to those lapse because I found I was leaving more than I was taking.
I think it is refreshing to read a magazine that dares to go against the flow, presents articles in a well thought out, thought provoking manner, and just dares to be different. I have found myself rereading several of their articles because they have left me thinking so much. I love that. Whereas, most of the articles in mainstream magazines, are clearly influenced by the medical establishment, and the formula manufacturers, and tend to be one sided and flip. IMO of course.
And I just can't resist the beautiful pictures of breastfeeding, cloth diapered babies, (non made up) adorning their covers. Just makes me melt! :)
I don't agree with everything they say, but the alternative...mainstream magazines funded by everything I disagree with (formula manufacturers, preachy docs who always think they are right and are loathe to have you actually question even the slightest thing)...is far less appealing to me. Mothering has gotten my $19.95 a year for 6 years now, and will continue to for many years to come. :)

I cringed at your title ... (Reply to this comment)

... but found the review a bit less cringe-worthy *lol* ... and while I think I have a slightly higher opinion of Mothering than you do, I'm glad you do find it helpful at times.
I fall in between the extremes as well, we do/did some of the natural parenting things that most people associate with Mothering (extended breastfeeding, cosleeping) ... we do/did other things (disposable diapers, me working, etc.) that some of the Mothering subscribers would freak over ... but honestly I find the articles and related advertisements in Mothering to be more helpful and supportive in avoiding problems or fixing problems with breastfeeding than the alternative of 'buy formula' which seems to be the only solution a lot of more commercial magazines offer. And it's nice to read articles on night time parenting that don't try to tell you that you *MUST* put your child in a crib and ignore their cries ... or that offer you positive alternatives to physical discipline, etc.
To each her own ... right?
Have a GREAT day!

our parenting isn't one or the other - so we get to make everyone mad. ;-)
Great review on this interesting magazine (that I'd never heard of - talk about taking away my "good mom" card!),
