| Profilewriter's Full Review: National Business Employment Weekly Magazine |
National Business Employment Weekly was put out by Dow Jones, the folks who bring you The Wall Street Journal. It was a tabloid newspaper with close connections to the mothership. Many, but not all, of the articles in this thick, weekly newspaper were written by Dow Jones reporters.
But National Business Employment Weekly was not about articles, not really. It was basically a cover and a couple of stories on job seeking strategies wrapped around a fist full of help wanted advertisements.
National Business Employment Weekly was expensive; I seem to recall a price tag approaching $5 a copy. With the advent of Internet job sites, this publication lost its monopoly on high quality national job listings, and it ceased publication last year.
It's replacement is Careers@WSJ.com (http://careers@wsj.com). This is a full-featured job search, career information, industry overview site. It contains general career articles -- "Confessions of a Dot-Com Employee", job search articles -- "Does 'Bad Fit' Mean Overqualified?", and much, much more.
Some of Careers' Best Features
-Industry information Let's say your field is human resources. You could go to Careers' toolkit section and scroll down to "Salary data by industry." There you would find out what various industries pay top HR people. This is useful even for beginners, and in fact could be tremendously helpful for anyone beginning a human resources career and not sure in which industry she wants to work. Checking in this easy-to-use section, it is easy to see that some industries pay the HR people a lot more than other industries do. Even in closely related industries, there can be huge differences.
As an example, according to this data, the top HR officer in a small college makes an average of $40,060, while her counterpart at a large college makes $84,000. And the top HR person at a typical restaurant corporation makes $107,000, while the same job brings an average of $146,500 in the wholesale grocery business.
Interesting.
For each industry, there is an extensive analysis of current hiring, prospects for continued hiring, and tips for landing a job and getting ahead in that industry. The usefulness of these articles is tarnished a bit by the fact that many are nearly a year old, but the site is working to update them.
-Job listings After you decide on a few industries that look like a good place to take your HR skills, you can go to this section and find out who is hiring. Listings here are extensive, up-to-date and easy to search. Each gives contact information, preferred method of applying, details about the job and links to the Web sites of each company that is looking for employees who have your skills.
-Job alert I really like this one! Enter your e-mail address, enter information on the type of job you are seeking and the geographical areas you will consider, and Careers will send you a list of matches every 3 or 7 days, your choice. What a time saver! I feature I really liked was an e-mail alert when a specific company you would like to work for has posted a job for which you are qualified.
-Personal career development help For a fee, Careers will link you up with CDS Telecounseling for a menu of services that include resume evaluation, career counseling and assessment testing. Prices range from $79 for the resume help to $219 for several 30 minute assessment sessions. I don't know about this one. On the one hand, it is difficult to write a really good, industry-specific resume, and it is so important to have one. On the other hand, a college placement office or friend in the industry might do as good a job, or better, at no cost.
