| jax's Full Review: New Scientist Magazine |
Really. This is the only magazine in any category that you ever need to read. Though if you do read New Scientist, chances are that you'll read a lot of other magazines too.
The main difference between New Scientist and most other popular science magazines is that NS doesn't present you with science as a product, but as a process. In other words, you don't get a fact sheet of answers, you get the questions themselves. While New Scientist doesn't dumb down to the reader, the articles are made and edited by science journalists, and can as such compare with any other kind of magazine.
Like the Economist at its best, New Scientist instills a fascination for subjects of which you before knew little or nothing. Unlike the Economist, however, New Scientist is at its best most of the time. While people with a strong interest in science will love this magazine, those that really benefit from it are those that have some interest in science as well as curiosity and a general interest in the world and the society.
The problem with news magazines is that when something is news, it is already old. Most gives you a list of articles on what has already happened, keeping current by reading them is like travelling backwards, you see all those items flashing into existence and then slowly receed into insignificance. New Scientist on the other hand, often makes you understand why events are unfolding, and thus make you better prepared when they happen. And conversely, a five year old New Scientist is still current.
When in addition it is cheap, with a good sense of humour and often with excellent graphical design, there's no reason not to get a subscription.
