jps246's Full Review: Outside Magazine Subscription
Longing to go trekking in Nepal, or sea kayaking along the coast of some far away land? Outside Magazine helps you see what youre missing and gives you some ideas on how to get there.
While some of the feature articles are reviews of areas that most mere mortals will never go, such as Mount Everest, or other equally exotic location, there are also articles about places we do go and with some helpful planning and travel advice.
In addition to writing about trips to far off lands (and ones not so far off), Outside generally has an article about issues affecting the environment and interviews with people involved in the outdoor and environmental communities. The latest issue (April 2003), offers feature articles on the increasing presence of cougars in the United States, a guide to staying fit and healthy throughout your life, an interview/story with a man that is planning climbing Everest and then snowboarding down it, and how a proposed dam in Belize could destroy a portion of the rain forest and threatens the endangered creatures there. The features are always well written and the accompanying photography is excellent. I have yet to come across and article in Outside that I have found boring or so poorly written that I couldnt read it. Some of the articles, I may never really have a need for, but that doesnt detract from their enjoyability.
What else is in Outside other than the feature articles?
Between The Lines is an introduction to the writers and the photographers of the current issue, Letters is your normal letters to the editor section, Exposure is a photo collection of a certain area, Active Traveler Directory is a guide to travel and vacation services, and Parting Shot is the last page of the magazine each issue and offers a parting photograph for everyone to ponder.
Theres more to the magazine too. A dispatches section often focuses on one issue and goes through the issue. For example, in the April 03 issue, Dispatches contains a 50-year retrospective on Mount Everest. Theres also the Wild File where questions from readers are answered and a review section that takes a look at some of the newest gear.
The magazine costs $3.95 for an issue on the newsstand and $16 for a year long subscription which consists of 12 issues.
Even if you just have a passing interest in the outdoors, Outside magazine will provide something for you. The armchair explorer will enjoy the articles and photography of locations that they dream about and the hit the dirty kind of guy will find use in the ones that give you information on trips, or help with fitness and exercise routines so that they can get out there. In addition, Outside generally doesnt write from one angle of outdoor activities and views, and therefore, no one generally feels slighted after they have read the magazine. If all you are interested in is say rock climbing, then you probably should go and get Rock and Ice because you will not enjoy Outside, they have the occasionally rock climbing article, but theres no one topic that the continually focus on issue after issue, except that everything relates to being outside.
Ive got lots of interests in the outside world, therefore I think that the magazine is good. Not only do I like to hike and camp, canoe and kayak, and even mountaineer occasionally, I like skiing and outdoor themed vacations, and in my professional life, Im an environmental planner, so even the articles on environmental impacts and other environmental issues are helpful and interesting. I have my share of issues of just hiking or skiing magazines, science journals and rest of that, but for just general reading, I enjoy having Outside with me.
Thus I think if you want a big picture view of the outdoors and what to do outside, then go and get yourself a copy of Outside and starting enjoying it!
