djwills's Full Review: Outside Magazine Subscription
Outside is a great magazine. I have read it for years. But lately it seems to me that they are getting a lot more esoteric and a lot less practical. I used to be able to rely on them for ideas about excursions and adventures that were near enough and reasonably-priced enough that I could hope to try them out.
But "Five hundred miles east of the Philippines lie 343 idyllic tropical islands teeming with marine life and World War II history. A guide to rambling the archipelago of Palau, home to crystalline waters, secret wartime hideouts, and enough diving, kayaking, and exploring to keep you salty and wet and ridiculously happy."??? What percentage of readers can actually hope to see this?
I know they probably get bored with the close-to-home stuff, but those of us who escape our careers in the outdoors rather than making the outdoors our careers, need guidance to use the limited time we have to best advantage.
So I hope they continue with the more "mundane" stuff, too.
