| Sisyphus03's Full Review: PC Week Magazine |
The magazine formerly known as PCWeek has changed its name to eWeek. Their explanation for this is that the scope of their articles has gone beyond PCs to also follow the electronic age. The only reason why I receive this magazine at home is because my father is a computer consultant and subscribed five years ago. Because this magazine is free of charge, we never bothered to cancel the subscription and every week the magazine, still in its plastic cover would be tossed into the trash bin. Because they changed their name recently, I thought it was a different magazine and opened it to see what it was about.
What’s Inside
Most free computer magazines are like techie Victoria’s Secret catalogs with pages and pages of computers vendors displaying their sleek flatscreens and latest processors with discount prices. eWeek strives to distance itself from its peers with commentary, news, and product reviews. For example this week you can find yet MORE articles about the Microsoft breakup, reviews of the new AMD Athlon chip, the Oracle 8i database, and Macromedia Dreamweaver. Instead of just covering Windows 2000, eWeek also goes through other operating systems like Linux and Unix. Sorry Mac users, I’ve not really seen anything in here for you except occasional articles about Steve Jobs or the candy colored iMac.
Who’s It For
If you want help on what ISP to subscribe or even what kind of computer to purchase, this magazine is not for you because there is little in this magazine that has to do with personal software or personal computers. Not a magazine you’d find at the barber or the dentists office :) This magazine is more geared towards the IT managers who want opinions on business software and convincing purchasing to buy it for the company. For a personal user like me, the only things I like to read are the news articles which constitute about 1/100th of the magazine.
