I enjoy knowing the behind-the-scenes stories that affect movies, television shows, the media, and the people who make them. I don't want sensational prying stories that violate a person's privacy. Intelligent, thoughtful interviews and insights are appreciated. That is why I enjoy reading People Magazine.
Description
This magazine is full of color photographs on typical magazine-weight paper. Each issue measures 7 3/4" wide x 10 1/2" high. The issues vary in length, usually 152 196 pages. The magazine does have advertisements focused on luxury shopping, personal and make-up products, food and beverages as well as the newest media releases.
A Table of Contents at the beginning of each issue lists the feature stories. Another smaller table includes the "regular" pieces that appear in each issue. These regular items include:
Mailbag -- Letters from readers
People.com -- Lists the top five most-read stories
Star Tracks -- Photos of media personalities
Scoop -- Breaking celebrity News
Reviews -- Movie and television reviews and highlights
Double Take -- Puzzle, find the differences between two photos
Style Watch -- Celebrity fashion
Chatter -- Celebrity quotes and a 3-Question feature for a star
The Interviews and Articles
I'm not a celebrity-gossip seeker. I dont purchase the tabloids or other magazines devoted to tracking the lives of stars. Still, I'm the type of person who enjoys knowing what goes into the making of a show, and what is new in the media industry. I like reading the pieces in this magazine despite some of the "gossipy" aspect.
As you can imagine, many of the articles feature stories about celebrities. The articles usually focus on specific events happening in their lives or the projects they are involved with. Other pieces can include personal stories about those serving in the military overseas, and even things as diverse and recipes from the stars. There are also off-beat human interest stories, some including pets or other wildlife. The stories are well written and informative.
There is usually a Question and Answer page devoted to one celebrity. It consists of a question-and-answer style interview where the questions are written in bold writing with the answers listed after the question.
The Puzzles
I love solving puzzles! The crossword puzzle features clues that center around show-business and pop-culture. The crossword puzzle squares are large and easy to write inside. A ballpoint pen works best when writing in the magazine.
The other puzzle is also fun. In each issue there are two photographs that are almost identical. The challenge is to find the six differences between the photos. This can be harder than it first seems!
What I Don't Like
The magazines are often scented with perfume or cologne. Ugggg. My nose itches just thinking about it! The scent doesn't dissipate over time, either. There are so many people with allergies, that I'm surprised this magazine would have perfumed pages.
It would also be great if each page had the page number printed on it. Sometimes it's difficult to locate specific items listed in the Table of Contents when the pages are missing their page numbers.
What I Wish the Magazine Had
I would love it if this magazine had more detailed television and movie listings. While it offers highlights, there is no meat to the shows mentioned. I know this isn't TV Guide, but more listings would be appreciated.
Purchasing
The second drawback to this magazine is the cost. This is a weekly magazine, except for the year-end issue which combines two magazine issues into one. The regular cost is $113.88 per year for US subscriptions and $155.48 for Canada.
Summary
I enjoy reading People Magazine. It offers a variety of articles that keep me in touch with the movie and television industry. It's fun knowing what is happening behind-the-scenes. I like it that this magazine delivers stories without being sensationalistic about it. All around this magazine is a good read.
