All right, I'll admit it. I love gossip. Not really in a malicious manner, but I just like to know what is going on in the lives of famous people. Celebrities sometimes amaze me with their audacity and sometimes I am surprised by their humanity. Either way, I like it.
That said, I will tell you that of all the trashy celebrity gossip magazines out there, my choice is People. I don't care if the National Inquirer has been right a few times, I don't even contemplate purchasing this magazine. I need truth! We all know People magazine would never lie to us!
One of my favorite activities is reading the letters from The Mail. The public can get really upset about some of the craziest things. In my most recent People, readers were upset by Carnie Wilson being on the cover at half her weight. A hefty accomplishment (forgive the horrible pun) wouldn't you say? Well, some folks were really up in arms over the fact that she had surgery, she'd taken the easy way out, that she was so concerned with appearance she would "mangle her internal organs." Wow! Seems people will disagree with just about anything. Makes for some fine reading!
Reading those nocuous letters is eclipsed only by all of the great photos of the celebrities themselves. I love to read that Nicole Kidman is a jealous harpy, just like we mere mortals! Oh, and the clothes they pick. I enjoy looking at all of the debs in beautiful gowns standing slightly sideways with a Queen Elizabeth wave and a 1000-watt smile plastered on their perfectly made up faces. However, luckily for us, People photographers also hang out in airports. I bet you I've walked past 10 celebrities myself and never knew it. Now I know where the term "grunge" originated.
Are you interested in seeing that new Blockbuster movie? Well, better check your People. They've got the scoop on everything from behind the scenes fighting and bloopers to a letter grade score to help you make an informed decision with your $7.50. They can also give you the inside line on television shows and music.
You've heard the old saying, "Oh, I read it for the articles." Well, this is somewhat true concerning People! They have fantastic articles about the now famous (like Lara Flynn Boyle who goes where she wants, dates who she wants and never apologizes), the once famous (Like the cast from Willy Wonka; haven't you ever wondered what happened to the real Veruca Salt?) and the almost famous (such as the Naked Chef from the Food Network; remember now, I read People for the articles). If you want it, they've got it, and more!
Loosetalk is a little sidebar that gives us a few humorous quotes from various celebs to prove that they, too, can have a sense of humor. Let me give you an example:
"No self-respecting gay guy would have ever made some of the hair and clothing choices I am still trying to live down." David Copperfield, on rumors that he's gay.
If there is one quality I admire (besides being insanely rich) it is the ability to laugh at oneself. No one should take themselves too seriously. That is what I love about People. It doesn't take itself too seriously. Hey, it's not Time magazine! So long as People's readers understand that it is for fun and not for newsworthy information, no one will be disappointed.
