Pros: Great Articles, Beautiful Women
Cons: Fictional Works are not interesting, Diversity
I read Playboy for the articles, and for the wonderful recipes that are in every issue. Hugh Hefner is a genius for creating a magazine, that is so interesting to read. Every month I await for my subscription to arrive, and tear off the black plastic cover to read the latest story on politics, religion, or international economic trends. I actually DO read the articles, but I will admit that the beautiful women certainly are a reason, to why I have had a subscription for the last few years.
Playboy magazine could be described, as being full of variety. There are a lot of different subjects covered in each monthly issue, as well as plenty of columns devoted to the issues of sex and romance. Each issue has a certain format, which includes articles on fictional and non-fictional topics. I personally have not cared for one fictional story in any issue, as they have been a bit boring and bizarre. However, Playboy has some of the best articles on current news events, and they provide plenty of in depth perspectives on issues that affect people on a daily basis. The articles on Iraq, and the drug wars in Canada have been particularly interesting.
There are also interviews every month, and the subjects have been actors, musicians, US and international politicians, human rights advocates, comedians, and other influencial individuals. This month Jessica Alba is interviewed, and in the last few issues they've interviewed George Carlin and Al Franken. This month it is Kanye West, so its obvious Playboy has the clout to get people in the news. The best part about these interviews, is that Playboy is not afraid to pull punches. There have been a lot of tough questions, and the interviewed individuals have been rather forthcoming about strong personal issues. Unlike softball interviews by the likes of Barbara Walters and Larry King, you actually get real answers that don't sound canned.
One of the best parts about Playboy, is there joke and Playboy Advisor columns. The Playboy Advisor is kind of like " all the answers to sex you wanted to know, but were afraid to ask." There is a lot of information about romantic ideas, sex positions, and relationship advice answered in each months column. There is also a lot of suggestions about fine dining and etiquette in there as well. The Joke column is quite funny, and there are even some jokes that you can repeat in a "clean environment." If you are offended by religious based jokes, then you might want to stay away from this page. There are also comics in each issue, that are quite funny without being too vulgar.
Playboy has articles in lifestyle topics as well. Each month, there is a review of music, new movies, video games, books, and DVD's. They have been very accurate in determining the good from the bad, and they make recommendations on what to buy or stay away from. They also usually feature an artist each month, and do a interview here as well. If you are interested in the latest technology, or want to know what the hottest fashion trend is, then look no further than Playboy as well for this information. They also include featurettes on watches, ties, shoes, and cigars!
The women featured in Playboy are ridiculously beautiful. People can complain about airbrushing or other techniques used by Mr. Hefner, but I have no complaints or objections. Playboy usually has three layouts in each magazine, with the feature being the Playmate of the Month. Most of the Playmates have been absolutely out of this world gorgeous, and my only problem with them has been a lack of diversity. I love all women, but Hugh seems to favor blondes for almost every Playmate. I'd like a little more flavor, and that would include women of different ethnic backgrounds as well. There have been very few minority women picked to be a Playmate, which is disappointing in my opinion.
The other two layouts usually include other beautiful women, but sometimes there is a different theme to them. The current issue, has singer Willa Ford and the 25 hottest celebrities as their layouts. Usually, one of the layouts is a celebrity, and the other could be something along the lines of "The Girls of Tuscany," or "The Women of Enron," etc. There is a good bit of variety here, and I appreciate the attention to international aspects. In addition, Playboy has had some top notch celebrities pose in their magazine. In the last year, Hef had the likes of Brooke Burke, Kelly Monaco, Denise Richards, and Pamela Anderson posing in his magazine. This is an impressive lineup, and each year there are a lot of celebrities in layouts. They also do feature layouts with "celebrity skin", which is images from major motion pictures. These can be decent, and this months issue features naked celebrities. There are only a few that pose naked, and they are the usual subjects. Most of the pictures were from older issues, so it seems like Playboy is doing a bit of recyling here. Each month's issue has a back page, that has recent pictures of celebrities with wardrobe malfunctions, which is pretty cool.
So do you want to order a classy magazine like Playboy? I suggest it, as my wife even enjoys reading the articles. It is a much nicer magazine with more beneficial content, then some of the more explicit competitors. I would recommend checking prices, as the cost of subscription varies. However, do subscribe, as each issue on the newsstand is priced at $5.99! Playboy.com has some offers ocassionally, but look at other websites that offer substantial discounts.(ie. Magazineline.com, student offer websites, etc.) I pay $16 a year for my subscription, and that came with a free College Girl DVD. Some of the newer offers by Playboy, give you a special edition magazine of lingerie, vixens, college girls, playmates in bed, or nudes with a subscription. Just be sure to look around, and compare to get the best possible deal!
