George_Chabot's Full Review: Popular Science Magazine
Popular Science Magazine
Ever since I was a boy I have been acquainted with this magazine, which has been in publication for several generations, dating back to 1875 in its earliest version. That makes me feel young!
Popular Science is non-fiction writing, just like these Epinions you read here.
Non-fiction means the writing is about stuff that actually exists; we were taught all along by my Dad and his generation, the WWII vets, to use our imagination and any fiction we needed was subject to our own discretion.
One of the main things we were allowed to do, encouraged even, was tell our own story. That meant basing our story on the truth but with latitude to tell it our own way, using our imagination to elaborate or embroider the tale but sticking mainly to the truth, of course. So the idea of reading fiction almost went against our grain as healthy boys - Heck, if something needed elaboration, we could make it up ourselves!
To fuel our imagination, we memorized a lot of factual data - that's the stuff I got out of Popular Science and its sister publication Popular Mechanics.
This process had a benefit that we didn't realize at the time, although our parents undoubtedly did - we were learning practical things like they had stopped teaching in school and the reading led to knowledge and the ability to apply the learning in a practical sense, which is something that they stopped teaching in public school because it showed who could catch on, and who couldn't - something the socializers could not endure as they tried to create their utopia of equally dumbed down kids - a plan that has gotten us exactly to the edge of financial oblivion as we see the financial markets trying to absorb all the shocks the social engineers have foisted on it for a couple decades, at least.
Popular Mechanics and Popular Science magazines were around the house from my earliest memories.
Popular Mechanics covers some of the more practical stuff like automotive and home fixit categories, but it has a good range of technical stuff and overlaps quite a bit with Popular Science. Both magazines are heavily into aerospace and featured many articles covering the entire life of the space program which has been the scientific breakthrough of my lifetime. Dr Werner Von Braun was the chief architect of the US Space Program and had many articles published in Popular Science.
I have seen the vast changes in micro electronics, chemistry, refrigeration, communications, and computers, as well as jet air travel around the globe making a world much smaller than it was when I was born. These subjects and more besides are covered for the layman quite well by Popular Science. They cover for the hands-on type of users, not necessarily the scientist, but the practical user, and if you are one of those type of readers, this magazine will appeal to you. Look at it as a news source on what is going on in science, be it medicine, chemistry, aerospace, computers, communications, outer space, cars, or home gadgets. Not the most comprehensive information, but you will be informed. The magazines also make a good stack of reading material for going through at a later time.
The current price of a magazine at the newsstand is $4.99 per issue, but subscriptions are available for $14 for 12 issues or $24 for two years worth (24 issues) of the monthly magazine. The current offer from the publisher includes a Popular Science T-Shirt with the subscription.
Remember, Popular Science may not be the most detailed scientific text available, but it is a well written publication for general readers that will keep you informed of the latest scientific developments from a practical standpoint.
Particularly recommended for school age boys as a great learning tool.
