Publication and costs
Premiere is published 10 times a year. Subscriptions are available directly from the publisher for as little as $10 a year, but if you pick up the magazine on the newsstand it will cost you $3.95. Even less expensive subscriptions are available through internet retailers.
Content
Each issue of Premiere is made up of two main sections, the Features and the Departments. Features contains the cover stories and other main stories in each issue. These articles are generally several pages in length, illustrated with photographs and generally not interrupted by advertisements. The latest issue includes stories on topics such as winners and losers in the film world from the last year, an interview with Ray Romano, along with a look at 2003s best movie directors.
The Departments section is made up of several smaller sections that include: Reviews; Previews; Action; First Look; Players; The Biz; Home Guide; The Backstory; and Letter Box. These sections cover various areas of the movie world, but in general are fairly explanatory. Reviews provides overviews and a look at the newest movies that are currently showing. Previews takes a look at movies that will be in theaters shortly. Action is a collection of behind the scene looks at various movies that are either currently out or in development. The Players section takes a look at an influential person in the movie world. The Biz takes a look at the Hollywood world and provides commentary and updates. The Home Guide looks at DVDs and videos that are available. The Backstory is a column by the editor at the Letter Box includes letters from readers to the magazine.
Advertising
On average about a ¼ to a 1/3 of the magazine is made up of advertisements. Generally these are focused in the front and the back of the magazine, with the majority of the Feature articles unbroken by advertising.
Premier and me
For some reason our office gets a free subscription to this magazine (go figure, considering our focus is aviation) and Ill peruse it each time that it comes in and bring it home after its made the rounds around the office. Ive never been a big Hollywood movie fan and in general, the magazine doesnt offer too much to me personally. However, some of the stories and articles on the movies are interesting and its a handy way for me to stay current on whats in theaters so when people ask if I want to see a movie, I can at least recognize the name and have an idea of what it is about.
If it werent free for me, I probably wouldnt get a subscription. My partner on the other hand enjoys it when I bring the old issues home from the office and if I ever got another job, hed probably start bugging me to get a subscription.
In the end, the writing is well done and the magazine does serve its purpose well highlighting the latest movies and giving a look at the Hollywood business. Id like to see some more focus on foreign or independent films (which Im more likely to see), but for anyone who wants to know what is going on, Premiere Magazine is a good resource and worth picking up or at only $10 a year, getting yourself a subscription.
Final Thoughts
At only $10 a year, a subscription (or just picking up an issue at the newsstand) to Premiere is well worth the money for anyone who wants information on the Hollywood movie scene.
