A Magazine that Spans Decades! -- Reader’s Digest
Written: Feb 25 '09 (Updated Feb 25 '09)
Pros:content rich, variety, long and short pieces, compact size, few ads, affordable
Cons:not known for its photography (good but not great)
The Bottom Line: Reader's Digest truly has something for everyone. Whether you want an interesting article or need some humor or short pieces while on the go, this magazine provides great reading.
My father learned to read from Reader's Digest magazine. I used it for homework assignments when in school. When my grandfather's eyesight dimmed, we purchased him the large-print edition of Reader's Digest. This magazine has been part of our family for generations!
Description
This compact size magazine packs a lot of information between its 200 pages. It's good there is a Table of Contents, since this magazine offers plenty of variety with a mix of articles (medical, business, celebrity features, current affairs). The magazine also includes regular columns and departments, which feature shorter content. Reader's Digest is a great mix of information and entertainment.
There are advertisements, but Reader's Digest is heavy in content, so the ads don't affect the pleasure of reading.
Our Experiences
Not only do we receive this magazine, but it's popular in the lunchroom where I work. I also see it the in doctor and dentist offices I visit. Reader's Digest has universal appeal, whether you like jokes, brief tidbits of information, or informative articles.
My favorite parts of this magazine include the shorter pieces. It's easy to grab this magazine and tuck it into a pocket or bag for reading while on the go. The short pieces are quick to absorb and fun, and there are lots of them throughout the magazine. Here are my favorites:
Word Power - I love testing and improving my vocabulary. This page offers multiple-choice definitions for words. (Ex: drumlin - A) leather wine flask, B) elongated ridge, C) parade of percussionists. - Answer: elongated ridge). A riddle and bonus question are also included.
Quotes - A page of quotes and wisdom from famous people. I find them inspiring and sometimes funny. (Ex: Genius is immediate, but talent takes time. -- Janet Flanner)
Laugh! - Everyone can use a chuckle and two pages are filled with jokes, riddles, one-liners and a cartoon.
Last Laugh - The last page of the magazine is devoted to a funny chuckle. I like the full-page cartoons.
The articles are a good length and easy to read. They are not one big blob of text. The pages are earmarked with bold subheadings, graphics, and sidebars of information. This makes information easier to absorb, and is easy on the eyes. These articles are packed with information too. I still remember the piece I read last year about how to improve one's memory. There are also interview-type pieces that are broken into Question-and-Answer segments.
If you are looking to get published, Reader's Digest pays decent money for content ... even for the anecdotes, jokes and quotes.
Purchasing
The Reader's Digest website offers 12 issues a year for $10.00, or 24 issues for $15.00.
Summary
Our family enjoys Reader's Digest. Everyone finds something of interest. This is also a great magazine to browse through if you don't have a lot of dedicated reading time. We like it!
