Readers Digest Magazine has been around for a very long time. My husband began getting this magazine as a gift when we first got married over 18 years ago. His father has given him the gift of a yearly subscription each Christmas. At first, I rarely read the magazine. I started reading the Magazine for the Drama in real life sections. Each month I was amazed at how normal people overcame life threatening events against all odds.
I enjoyed each and every article and for the last couple of years I have been a regular reader of the magazine. Readers Digest is broken down into a number of different sections each month. Some of them deal with health issues, some are about real life heroes, and some deal with general interest issues. Also each month are articles under Departments such as: News of Medicine, Personal Glimpses, Day's Work, Humor in Uniform, and my favorite That's Outrageous.
Readers Digest is made up with articles by free lance authors and articles from various magazines and newspapers. Some of these articles come from sources such as Salon.com, Outdoor Life, The Chicago Sun-Times, The Boston Globe, and the Washington Post. That is just a small sampling of the many articles submitted by different sources. Some of my favorite sections are as follows:
•Drama in Real Life
Each month an article describing a real life drama is published. The current issue is about a driver who passes out and begins driving erratically. She is helped out by another driver who comes to her rescue as the vehicles are moving; destroying his vehicle in the process. Each month a different article is published. The endings usually make you feel very good. Articles have been about everything from drownings to accidents.
•Humor in Uniform
Humor in Uniform is a group of submissions by military personnel, family of military personnel, or friends of military personnel. Each person who submits a story is paid $ 400.00 for their true unpublished stories. The stories are very humorous and a must read each month.
•That's Outrageous
This section of the magazine deals with every type of thing that gets Americans upset. From releases of Criminals early to corrupt politicians. Each month is packed full of issues that get my blood pressure boiling. This month an article about over weight water trucks being ticketed in Idaho, and forced to dump some of their water, is included. (They were on there way to a huge fire!)
I have enjoyed sharing this magazine with my daughters. My oldest loves reading it. If I don't tell her when it has arrived in the mail she seems to get a little cranky. When they read the magazine both of my daughters are either shocked or enlightened as to what occurs in this world. I feel the magazine gives them an insight into articles and issues they would not get in the mainstream media.
The Magazine is $ 2.49 per issue or $ 24.76 for 12 issues.
Now, as for my title...Reader's Digest is published in 19 different languages. Some of the languages are: English, Spanish, Finnish, Danish, German, In Braille, on cassettes and in large print.
