| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Red Herring Magazine |
Business magazines are a common item in my house and on my desk at work. I like to thumb through the pages of different business magazines both to read current events and to get new ideas. One magazine I have been receiving and reading for more than a year now is Red Herring, a publication dedicated to technology.
Basic Contents of This Magazine:
Red Herring is a short magazine with about 50 to 60 pages in each issue. Regular departments include:
Publishers Letter- The standard opener to each issue, written by Alex Vieux.
Editors Note- This is a brief intro to the issue, written by Editor in Chief, Joel Dreyfuss.
IPO Watch- Here, you will find an IPO update, complete with some notes on some recent IPOs and how they have performed.
The Week- This is a weekly recap of the latest and hottest tech- related news.
Internet- This department highlights the latest business news of the world wide web.
Finance- Capital, the means to raise it, IPOs, and similar subjects make up the reports in this department.
Hardware- Communications devices, Toys, and other items in the news are part of this department.
Software- Same as Hardware above, except this department includes news about the latest innovations in software.
Biosciences- Drugs, medicines, etc., are the focus of this department.
A few longer features- about three per issue- plus a couple other departments (sporadic departments that show up every now and then) round out the reading in each issue.
Cost to Subscribe:
Red Herring sells for the base subscription price of $48 for 48 issues (weekly issues, except for four weeks per year when it isnt printed). This works out to one dollar per issue, representing a savings of 75 percent off the $3.99 cover price. With little difficulty, a person can find even better deals on the internet, slashing the subscription price down even lower, often to $30 or less for the same 48 issues.
Customer Service/Magazine Website:
The web site for this magazine is redherring.com. Articles from the recent issue, blogs, calendars of technology events, and more can be found in the web site. If you wish to speak directly with customer service rep, the toll- free number is 866-311-9582.
Final Thoughts:
Red Herring is a business magazine that is all about technology. It is one of several business magazines that I read each month but the only technology magazine I read that is issued so frequently. Red Herring is published 48 times per year, and thus it offers up- to- date news in the world of high tech.
This magazine devotes most of its space to news stories. In fact, with the exception of Editors Note and the Publishers Letter, all of the other departments listed above are labeled in the magazine as News Departments. Each of these departments talks about hot off the presses news stories with articles that are succinct and give you the facts you want to know in a limited amount of space.
When Red Herring isnt talking about the news, it is sharing with the reader an article related in some way to business and these articles are often quite good. Unlike other business magazines, the featured articles in Red Herring are not necessarily about the usual business themes, like profits, sales, and wages. No, what you get in Red Herring is often more interesting than that- the type of articles that will appeal to a wide range of readers regardless of interest. An example would be an article about government regulations on the internet. Another might be an article about labor unions. This combination of politics and business makes for some interesting reading. Yes, you will still get the usual business articles but it is nice that there are other things to read about.
One other thing you will notice about Red Herring is that its a magazine with plenty of statistics. Bar charts, line graphs, statistical tables and more can be found throughout Red Herring. I know that some readers dislike all these numbers but as a numbers guy, I like examining these charts and I feel they add quantitative meaning to the articles. The news sections all have statistics included and I like the general stat found in each The Week department. This one is trivial in nature, but it relates to technology and it often points out a startling fact about technology and its use on the world.
Red Herring keeps its advertising under control. In a typical issue, only about thirty percent of the pages contain ads and, like other magazines of this genre, they blend very well into the writing- so well, that you dont really notice them. They are almost all related to technology so you dont even care they are there. Also, Red Herring does not contain the usual classified ad section in the back like most other magazines, and this fact significantly cuts down on the number of ads in each issue.
Overall, Red Herring is a good weekly magazine about business and technology. Its articles are more direct in nature and they get quickly to the point, explaining what needs to be explained in few words and keeping readers up to date on the latest technology news.
