| garypai's Full Review: Red Herring Magazine |
The latest prices of Red Herring are $24.50 for 12 issues, not the stated $34.50. This magazine is targeted towards Venture Capitalists and people interested in Venture Capital (either as a career, or seeking funding from them) As someone in the Internet/New Media industry, I find Red Herring an essential read to keep up to date on the latest happenings in fast growth companies.
What I like about the magazine is that it offers the most up-to-date information on all the new high tech and Internet companies. They won't cover your random Bob's Home Pages, but they cover the players who are developing important business models and have tremendous potential. So, if you read cover to cover, you will find that you have just learned about 50 to 60 very interesting companies, from which, maybe one of them will change your life in the future. Another great feature from Red Herring is the IPO tracking chart they feature in every issue. You can see which high tech and Internet companies have IPO'ed in the past few months and see their current performance. Also, be sure to participate in their online chat forums, which supplement the online article.
The one gripe I have about Red Herring is that I never feel truly satisfied after reading one of their articles. Do you know the feeling you get after reading a Newsweek article about a breaking event? Well, Red Herring does not go as in-depth as those articles, and does not give you a chance to really think about what you are reading. Instead, their articles are much less sophisticated and tend to tell you what you should be thinking. However, given the secrecy of the companies they cover, it should be expected that their ability to get very insightful information would be very limited.
Overall, if you are interested in the High Tech and Internet industry, this is definitely one of the top three magazines you should be reading, behind Fast Company and the Industry Standard. If you are involved in the industry, this is a must read, because you never know what potential business partner (or job opportunity) may be lost because you missed an article.
